1 student dead in stabbing at University of Toledo

Published: Thu, December 20, 2012 @ 12:52 p.m.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A fight between two students in a mostly empty dormitory at the University of Toledo left one dead and another injured, police said today.

Both were stabbed in what authorities said was not a random attack. Police do not believe anyone else was involved.

The two men, who knew each other, got into a fight Wednesday night in a stairwell at the dormitory where they were staying during the school’s holiday break, authorities said.

Police and university officials stressed that the violence was an isolated incident and that the campus was safe.

“There’s nothing we could have done to prevent this,” said Jeff Newton, the university’s police chief.

The men’s names were not immediately released. The one who survived was found with several stab wounds outside the International House on campus, and the one who died was found about 10 minutes later, Newton said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed.

Ten students, including four student workers along with four staff members, were staying at the dormitory over the break.

Police said they sent out an alert to students, faculty and staff advising them there was a dangerous situation and to stay away from the dormitory.

"Assault knives"!! Where's Biden, c'mon Obama get on this before knife wielding maniacs threaten the fabric of America! While you're at it ban cancer, it seems to be killing more people than guns and knives!

It must be wonderful to be so smart.

Further, this very emotional discussion has already turned from the anomalous attacks on schools to the all too common daily homicides in urban areas such as the south and west sides of Chicago or the south side of Youngstown. Here is the point. Stabbing is the second most common form of homicide in this country. Creating laws to reduce the amount of knives will do nothing to change that statistic. Similarly, more gun laws will do nothing to prevent criminals and the insane from perpetrating violence on the innocent and unarmed. Mr. Lanza was bent on this insane act and no law was going to stop him.Perhaps an armed guard or teacher would've been a real deterrent?

Putting guns into schools and around children will not make them safer. An armory has no place in a school.

Respectfully, I disagree. Malls, theaters and schools are targets for unstable individuals precisely because they are gun free zones. The perpetrators know they will find no resistance to their insane aggression. Please examine each of the recent tragic events for evidence. If the TSA (thousands standing around) can violate my Constitutional Rights at every airport visit in the name of the greater good, I suggest we employ returning military personnel and retired, capable law enforcement personnel to prevent future tragedies.

I'm sorry Abe, did Larry just shove your foot in your mouth?! Plain and simple, gun hating, hippie smelling, tree hugging jerkoffs such as Abe want something easy to blame and guns are it. Owning a gun in Mexico is extremely regulated. In order to even have one outside of your residence you must be in a member of security, the military or law enforcement but yet the drug cartels don't seem to care about those laws. You know why Abe?! Because they are criminals!! They don't care about laws, they will kill you, with a gun, with a knife, with a freaking banana if they can! And in Mexico it happens daily because no one is allowed to carry their gun outside of their residence! Grow up and get off the band wagon!

Enlighten me with your brilliance. Please tell me how this could have been prevented. By banning guns? Sorry, that just won't do in this country due to something called the Second Amendment of The Constitution. I am sure you disagree with the Second Amendment, but I challenge you and those like you to call for a Constitutional Convention to change it. So short of banning guns, please tell me how this could have been prevented? By the way, Mr. Lanza murdered his mother to access the guns. Though the CT police have made no statement to how the guns were stored, given how Mrs. Lanza treated guns and gun responsibility, they were likely under lock and key. Though she might have realized her son was in need to help for his mental instability, I am certain she did not expect to be murdered by her son. Again, the new normal demands armed guards in gun free zones.

On the very same day that 26 people were killed by a gun in Conn.,22 kids and 1 adult were slashed or stabbed by a nut in a classroom in China.
NOT one child died nor the adult!
That's the difference.

This is a non-story for someone in Youngstown. The only reason it is publicized is because of what happened last Friday.

Save you histrionics for Oprah or Dr. Phil. Further, nothing like name calling to further your cause. I think I will keep this on an intellectual level. There is no irony in Mrs. Lanza's death. You continue to ignore the fact the Adam Lanza was going to kill and nothing was going to stop him other than an armed and trained person at the school. Fascinating that that guns sales skyrocketed the day after this tragic event. I wonder why that could be? As for the last time a mass murder was stopped by an armed person, how about Clackamas Mall in Portland...

or how about Pearl MS in 1997...

Abe, you haven't responded with anything other than emotional hysteria. You refuse to deal with facts and logic. You then resort to useless name calling. What a tough guy.

Larry, I have no problem with police or security guards in schools. I think that's well-reasoned. I don't see much clamor for that well thought out response. I see people saying they don't want to pay for it or yammering about making teachers carry guns.

What a bunch of blow hard liberal commie socialists. Talking to you @HonestAbe. You folks don't make a shred of sense, cowards.

Let's cry about guns, waa waa.

I've never, once, ever, seen a gun kill someone. Guns don't get up, load themselves and go on benders. Idiots do.

If guns are sooooo bad then I want you to ask your local, county, state and federal police to disarm themselves. Hey, coppers in the UK mostly are unarmed aside from a club and some defense spray.

People are all mentally distorted over the gruesome and senseless shootings, but we are fine with over 1 MILLION US SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN BEING HOMELESS? Where's Obama's crocodile tears over that? Where are Joe Biden and his Catholic charities in outlawing abject poverty to the point of houselessness?

There are plenty of mass murders committed with knives, swords and other sharpened steel implements. Been going on since metallurgy started.

Beware of the semi-auto box knife. Or did we forget September 11, 2001, and major airplanes taken over by fools with "box cutters"?

I see nothing mentioned about strangulation. This meathod of death can easily be prevented by a well placed gunshot to the attacker. Gun control for those using it for defense is defined as a clear mind and a steady hand.

I guess having more guns around really works after all. It did at fort hood right?

Why would you make such an ignorant statement. I am not calling you ignorant, but your assertion clearly reveals you lack of knowledge of the Fort Hood shooting. As with all these mass shootings, the perpetrator selected unarmed targets, in this case in a military medical facility. Carrying side arms on base at Ft. Hood was prohibited other than for training. Hasan was felled by the first armed police officer he encountered. There were immediate calls to allow soldiers to carry their side arms following the shooting.

Publish a list of all knife owner's so we know where they live. More to the point, publish a list of all patients of mental facilities/psychiatrists/psychologists. This would do more to predict who is a risk for a rampage. Cross-reference the list of mental patients with that of gun purchasers and you would find a more logical listing of those at the most risk for killing innocents.
