Gov. Kasich spares condemned Ohio obese killer

Published: Mon, December 17, 2012 @ 5:45 p.m.

COLUMBUS (AP) — The governor today sidestepped a decision about whether a condemned inmate was too fat to be humanely executed by sparing the prisoner on the grounds that he had poor legal representation.

Gov. John Kasich's decision to grant clemency to Ronald Post mirrored the recommendation of mercy by the state parole board, which said it didn't doubt Post's guilt but said there were too many problems with how he was represented 30 years ago.

Post, who weighs 450 pounds, never raised the issue of his size with the board. And Kasich, who commuted Post's sentence to life with no chance of parole, didn't mention Post's obesity claim in his statement. Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said the governor didn't consider Post's obesity claim.

The governor said all criminal defendants, regardless of the heinousness of the crimes, deserve an adequate defense.

"This decision should not be viewed by anyone as diminishing this awful crime or the pain it has caused," Kasich said.

Yeah they all cheer and scream for death but when it comes up that some one innocent (not saying he was) or some one didn't get a fair trial. They disappear and pretend they didn't see it

Although I'm sure some people will say WHO CARES If some one didn't get a fair trial!!?! KILL HIM

Angry repubs will only complain if the local Dems did the exact same thing.

Much like they are not complaining about kasich using future money from the turnpike to support his cause now.

The death penalty is unconstitutional. In today's modern society, incarceration is secure enough that we have gone beyond the point where we need to execute criminals for the safety purposes.

BTW, I am a Republican.

""....which said it didn't doubt Post's guilt but said there were too many problems with how he was represented 30 years ago.""

So the FAT cowardly pig got away with murder. Pitiful decision, now this fat slob can live his life out in peace and die peacefully and the family of Helen Grace Vantz has no closure. What a society we live in, where you could cowardly kill someone and the cold blooded killer can still get up each and every day. I'm sure it would be so different if it was your mother or someone you loved that got murdered, but since it's not, you's feel he should still live and eat his way to his death. Pitiful society.

BTW I'm a independent.

According to police and prosecutors, Post and two other men had cased the motel on Dec. 14, 1983. But Post returned alone later and talked to the desk clerk there about staying at the hotel at a later date and was introduced to Vantz when she came on duty around 12:15 a.m. Dec. 15.

He left but later returned and was let inside by Vantz, whom the other clerk had told that Post might come back. Vantz was shot twice in the head and was found about 7:30 a.m. at the desk where she had been working on the motel’s receipts.

Post made off with $100 and some of Vantz’s personal items.

How does this guy weigh so much if he is in prison? How much are they giving him to eat?

Anyone that thinks spending the rest of your life in prison is a soft option needs to have their heads examined.

As for his diet he is provided 3 meals a day courtesy of the state. Anything extra is either paid for by him working which isn't possible because of his previous death sentence or because some one has been putting money on his books to buy commissary.

I know it must really perplex some people of a particular political persuasion but everyone including him is entitled to a fair trial with adequate representation. You don't get to pick and chose whose rights you honor and whose you deny.

It's better then being dead, no?

"Anything extra is either paid for by him working which isn't possible because of his previous death sentence or because some one has been putting money on his books to buy commissary."

He'll be able to work now and be put in general population. And I'm sure he's getting tons of money on his books. How do you think he got so FAT! Not from the 3 meals a day, the good ole commissary and all the JUNK FOOD.

"You don't get to pick and chose whose rights you honor and whose you deny."

A clear cut case cowardly murderer should get DEATH within a year!
