Sackella pleads guilty to theft from the Poland Swim ClubPublished: 12/13/12 @ 12:05
The former treasurer of the Poland Swim Club has pleaded guilty to stealing about $24,000 from the club over three years.
Brad A. Sackella, 40, of Four Seasons Trail, Poland, pleaded guilty Wednesday to a bill of information containing a single fourth-degree felony theft count.
Sackella appeared before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who will sentence him at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 8.
The club fired Sackella in June, and Poland Township police probed the theft this summer.
The prosecution alleges Sackella, a certified public accountant, stole the money to start an accounting firm, said Martin P. Desmond, an assistant county prosecutor.
Sackella has repaid $8,000 of the stolen money, and Desmond is recommending probation for Sackella if he makes full restitution.
State records show Sackella was first licensed as an Ohio CPA in June 1997 and that he has an active license, which is scheduled to expire Dec. 31, 2013.
Asked whether Sackella’s CPA license is in jeopardy because of his guilty plea to a felony, Desmond replied: “Absolutely.”
Located at 6072 Clingan Road and founded in 1958, the club is funded by dues, which are $425 annually for families, and, in return, members receive a stock certificate.
The club features a large heated pool, a fenced-in toddler pool, a playground, a snack bar, three picnic pavilions and tennis, volleyball, basketball and bocce courts, according to the club website.
