Ravi Shankar dies at 92 in San Diego

NEW DELHI

With an instrument perplexing to most Westerners, Ravi Shankar helped connect the world through music. The sitar virtuoso hobnobbed with The Beatles, became a hippie musical icon and spearheaded the first rock benefit concert as he introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over nearly a century.

From George Harrison to John Coltrane, from Yehudi Menuhin to David Crosby, his connections reflected music’s universality, though a gap persisted between Shankar and many Western fans. Sometimes they mistook tuning for tunes, while he stood aghast at displays such as Jimi Hendrix’s burning guitar.

Shankar died Tuesday at age 92. A statement on his website said he died in San Diego, near his Southern California home, with his wife and a daughter by his side.

Judge revokes Lohan’s probation

LOS ANGELES

A Los Angeles judge revoked Lindsay Lohan’s probation Wednesday and scheduled a probation- violation hearing that could result in more jail time for the closely watched “Liz and Dick” star.

The 26-year-old actress faces three counts of reckless driving, lying to a police officer and obstructing an officer from performing duties after an accident in which Lohan’s Porsche slammed into the back of a dump truck in June.

Authorities in Santa Monica, Calif., allege Lohan lied about being behind the wheel before the accident, and the charges could prompt a probation violation in her 2011 necklace theft case.

‘Modern Family’ star’s family to try counseling

LOS ANGELES

The family of teenage actress Ariel Winter agreed Wednesday to undergo counseling to try to resolve whether she will return to her parents’ home or continue to live with her adult sister.

The accord came shortly before a trial over who would raise the “Modern Family” star was scheduled to begin, with both sides appearing likely to air longtime family grievances and other issues in court. Winter’s mother, Chrisoula Workman, has been accused of physically and emotionally abusing her 14-year-old daughter, claims she has vehemently denied.

For the next several months, Winter will continue living with her sister, Shanelle Gray, whose hand she held throughout court proceedings as a judge reviewed the agreement. Her father, Glenn Workman, has been given temporary control of his daughter’s finances, and both parents agreed to undergo counseling with Winter and Gray to try to seek a long-term reunification.
