U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, has been reappointed to the House Appropriations Committee, which will have jurisdiction over more than $1 trillion in fiscal year 2013, which began in October, according to a press release from the congressman’s office.
Last week, Ryan was named to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. The committee’s job is to assign party members to House committees and advise Democrats on policy.
House fire in Howland
A woman suffered smoke inhalation and three cats died in a house fire Tuesday afteroon at 1440 Raccoon Drive NE.
Firefighters were called to the fire about 1:20 p.m. They found a woman who lived at the home had crawled out the back door of the split-level house and was on the patio. None of the other family members was home.
The family dog also escaped, but three cats died. The woman was treated at St. Joseph Health Center. Her name wasn’t released.
“They did have working smoke detectors,” said township Fire Chief James Pantalone. “They saved her life.”
Firefighters were called to a house fire at 51 N. Wood St. Extension about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. All of the occupants escaped the home without injury and the blaze remains under investigation, fire officials said.
The Warren Family Mission is in need of toys for children of all ages for its Christmas Toy Give-a-Way Outreach Ministry. Sign-ups are under way, and there are more than 400 families in need of toys for their children this year. Toy distribution is Dec. 20, but the mission requests that toys be donated by Tuesday.
The mission is asking for new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls age 0-18. The toys can be dropped off at 361 Elm Road N. anytime seven days a week; or at 2671 Youngstown Road SE from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call Michelle Beauchene at 330-394-5437.
All officers for the Mahoning County Fire Chief’s Association have been re-elected.
The officers are Sebring Fire Chief James Cannell, president; Cardinal Joint Fire District Chief Donald Hutchison, vice president; Austintown Fire Chief Andy Frost III, treasurer; and Lowellville Fire Chief Al Boggia Jr., secretary.
The election for the 2013 term was at the Sebring Mansion during the association’s annual holiday party.
Members of the Mahoning County Ohio State University Extension Office Master Gardeners will conduct ceremonies Saturday to honor military veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day.
The first ceremony is at 10 a.m. at Paradise United Church of Christ Cemetery, 10020 New Buffalo Road, where wreaths will be placed on 58 graves of military veterans; and the second at 11:15 a.m. at Paradise Lutheran Church Cemetery, 3689 Western Reserve Road, where wreaths will be placed at 37 graves.
When the wreaths are placed, the veteran’s name is said aloud. The wreath reads: “In grateful remembrance of your service to the country. Merry Christmas.”
