Kasich will make turnpike announcement at Austintown truck dealer

AUSTINTOWN — Gov. John Kasich, who has considered leasing the Ohio Turnpike will make an announcement Thursday at Cerni Motors in Austintown about a “new highway funding strategy and turnpike plans,” according to an email from his office.

The email states the governor “will announce new strategies for filling Ohio’s $1.6 billion highway funding deficit.”

The Columbus Dispatch reported today that Kasich will not try to lease the turnpike and instead look to generate money for state infrastructure work by leveraging the turnpike by issuing new debt against it or redirecting toll revenue toward non-turnpike road projects.

Kasich wants to steal money from the turnpike to upgrade roads in strongly Republican areas. The counties that rely on the turnpike are more strongly Democratic. Personally I avoid toll roads whenever economically possible. For greatest economic vibrancy, tolls should be eliminated and the turnpike merged into ODOT. The exits along the turnpike typically show reduced private capital investment as compared to freeway exits. A new method of financing the road network needs developed, so that we can always take the most efficient routes with less diversions to unfavorable routes due to economic reasons.

If the pike is privatized, the tolls will increase to more align with the true cost of operating it.

@ NoBS:

From what you state, if it currently does not generate sufficient toll revenue, from where is the needed additional revenue derived?

It couldn't be taxpayer dollars, could it ?
