Howland fire kills 3 cats, woman survives

Published: Tue, December 11, 2012 @ 9:10 p.m.

HOWLAND — A woman suffered smoke inhalation and three cats died in a house fire this afternoon at 1440 Raccoon Drive NE.

Firefighters were called to the fire about 1:20 p.m. They found a woman who lived at the home had crawled out the back door of the split-level house and was on the patio. None of the other family members were home.

The family dog also escaped, but three cats died. The woman was treated at St. Joseph Health Center. Her name wasn’t released.

“They did have working smoke detectors,” said township Fire Chief James Pantalone. “They saved her life.”
