Woman’s body found after small fire in house

YORK, Pa. (AP) — Officials say a Pennsylvania woman was found dead more than 24 hours after a fire that burned itself out before authorities knew it had even happened.

The York County coroner’s office says 68-year-old Margaret Mann was pronounced dead Sunday evening. A caretaker had called 911 after discovering her body inside the woman’s York home.

Fire officials say the fire was apparently caused Saturday by careless smoking. Officials say Mann apparently woke up after a sofa caught fire and tried to get out of the house but was overcome by smoke.

Investigators say the fire filled the home with smoke but wasn’t very intense and went out on its own. Neighbors in attached homes on either side didn’t know there’d been a fire.
