Ohio schools panel weighs pupil restraint, seclusion

Published: Mon, December 10, 2012 @ 7:20 p.m.

COLUMBUS (AP) — The state school board in Ohio is continuing to debate new regulations for how educators must seclude and physically restrain students.

The issue arose today during an Ohio Board of Education committee and during a board presentation.

Some educators have balked at setting rules for such practices, complaining they could overburden school systems with training, testing and paperwork. Parents and advocates for special-needs children generally want to see such policies in place to protect students.

The rules would identify the safest way to restrain and seclude youngsters to keep them calm.

John Charlton, education department spokesman, said no vote will be taken on proposed rules during the two-day monthly meeting that continues Tuesday. To accommodate further debate, the decision has been deferred to January.

Seriously? MORE bureaucracy and MORE rules and guidelines? Why do we even need to "restrain" students, and why are we even worried about keeping them calm? Special needs kids are a different problem altogether, but unless this story is very poorly written, they aren't the main thrust of this new concern (and waste of time and money).

Those out-of-control kids need to learn and understand that there will be negative consequences for their actions, and they need to experience those consequences enough times that they equate them with the negative behavior. You cannot reason with them until they understand that there are limits to acceptable behavior, and that acting beyond those limits will not be tolerated.

If it takes corporal punishment to get their attention, then that's what it takes.

This isn't what the state board of education should be spending its time on.
