Green leads YCS past Campbell
KaeVon Green scored 14 points and Hayquan Yanno 12 to lead Youngstown Christian to Saturday’s 63-49 victory over Campbell.
J. Shorter led Campbell with 15 points.
Boardman High basketball player Megan Volosin scored 16 points including six in overtime in Saturday’s 47-44 win over Massillon Perry. Another player was incorrectly credited with Volosin’s points.
Boardman swimmers set meet record
Boardman High swimmers Sarah Gonda, Kelsie Stutz, Brooke Bailey and Colleen Manning teamed up to set a record at Saturday’s Northeast Aquatic Conference Relay Meet at Warren Harding High.
Boardman set a new record in the 250 Crescendo Medley with a time of 2:32.25.
Canfield falls, 4-1
Canfield goaltender Megan Cole made 34 saves in Sunday’s 4-1 loss to West Geauga.
Josh Tancer’s slap shot from the point was the only score Canfield (1-7, 1-3 Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League) could get past West Geauga goalie Brenden Judson.
Canfield will host the Brush Arcs this Wednesday at the Ice Zone with puck drop at 5:45 p.m.
Hill sparks OSU
Tayler Hill scored 19 points and No. 20 Ohio State never trailed in defeating Lafayette 81-41 Sunday for its 28th consecutive victory at home.
Hill, who has scored in double figures in 42 straight games, hit a 3-pointer 20 seconds into the contest and the Buckeyes (6-2) never looked back.
They led 38-16 at halftime and by as many as 47 points, 78-31, with 4:11 left in the game.
Ohio State dominated both inside and out, outscoring the Leopards (3-7) 40-10 in the paint while making 9 of 17 shots from 3-point range (52.9 percent).
Indiana wins NCAA men’s soccer title
Nikita Kotlov scored off a header pass from Eriq Zavaleta midway through the second half to give Indiana a 1-0 victory over Georgetown on Sunday to win the NCAA men’s soccer championship.
It is the eighth championship for the Hoosiers (16-5-3), their first since 2004.
Indiana midfielder Patrick Doody lofted a crossing pass to the right of the goal that brought Georgetown goalkeeper Tomas Gomez out from the net.
Zavaleta got to the ball before the Hoyas’ Jimmy Nealis, sending a header to Kotlov that he easily kicked into the open net.
It was the third consecutive 1-0 victory for the Hoosiers.
NHL, union could resume labor talks
NHL labor talks could be back on as early as this week after negotiations fell apart just a few days ago.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly tells The Associated Press he has been in contact with the players’ association, and the sides are working on returning to the bargaining table.
Talks broke down Thursday night after three straight days of talks at a New York hotel.
Messi breaks record with 86th goal of 2012
Lionel Messi has broken German great Gerd Mueller’s 40-year-old record for most goals in a year by scoring for the 86th time in 2012.
The Argentine forward scored twice Sunday, putting Barcelona ahead of Real Betis 2-0 by the 25th minute of the Spanish league match.
His first goal was an individual effort in the 16th minute to equal Mueller’s record.
He eclipsed the 1972 milestone with a familiar left-footed finish nine minutes later.
Messi is a finalist for the FIFA’s world player of the year award.
