Warren mayor provides $3,000 toward recruitment of minorities to safety forces

WARREN Council members Helen Rucker and Cheryl Saffold came to last week’s Warren Civil Service Commission meeting ready to begin to tackle the challenges of recruiting minorities, women and Warren residents to jobs in the Warren fire and police departments.

The chairman of the committee, Assistant Chief Neil Heller of the Warren Fire Department, didn’t attend, but Rucker revealed that Mayor Doug Franklin has authorized $3,000 to help move the process forward.

Saffold showed the civil service commission a recruitment brouchure produced by Canton officials as a step she hopes Warren will emulate.

Rucker suggested that one use for the $3,000 be to produce a similar brochure and to run recruitment notices in local newspapers “that minorities read,” including the Buckeye Review and Call and Post.

I thought this attitude of giving skin color preference over qualifications was going away. Not around here, apparently.

What do you expect from a BLACK mayor? He only wants his own kind in there. Wheter they are qualified or not. Its a number situation.only.

How come this isn't considered discrimination? So a white person is going to be looked over because of the color of his skin? My, my if this was the other way around, the riots would be uncontrollable. Pitiful.

You better start recruiting in the elementary schools before they become involved in gangs, crimes and illegal activities. With a 50% dropout rate in the innercity schools, 85% in prisons, finding qualified applicants will be hard. Without a pardon and governors foregiveness of all their past wrong doings, I doubt if some minorities will meet the criteria to fill out an aplication. The few good ones that push away the reasons of the others that will keep them down will go one to be successful by their own merits. When a minority becomes a law officer anywhere they are look at as a turncoat among their specific ethnic group. Another roadblock for minorities to enter law enforement.

How is this allowed to happen? Looking at this scenario: If I was competing with a minority for this position, and I was the clear cut choice, I would be overlooked simply because I'm white and they need more blacks, hispanics, indians, etc in this field? Why should I be punished for qualifying for a position? Isn't this discrimination? I guess the same logic can be - and is -applied for federal grants and student loans...

I hope the city can dignify their decision to base employment mainly, if not solely, on race.
