Allegiant Air adds flight to Punta Gorda, Fla., from Toledo
Staff and wire report
A discount airline says it will start a new route between Toledo and Florida’s Gulf Coast this winter.
Allegiant Air in February will offer round-trips flights twice a week between Toledo Express Airport and Punta Gorda near Fort Myers.
The new flights will begin Feb. 16.
Allegiant Air is the only regular air carrier out of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. It offers flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and several Florida destinations. Officials have talked about a possible future expansion of Allegiant service at that airport as well.
Airport operators in Toledo have struggled to attract carriers for the last few years, losing routes to New York and Denver. Other carriers have dropped routes to Florida and other destinations in the South.
Many travelers have been opting to fly out of Detroit where more flights are available and rates are often less expensive.
