Youngstown State University announced this morning a $500,000 gift from Farmers National Bank to help in the construction of the new sports complex along Fifth Avenue across from Stambaugh Stadium.
The soccer field that is part of the complex will be named Farmers National Bank Field, pending the approval by the YSU Board of Trustees in March.
The field will be used by YSU students participating in intra-murals and club sports, as well as by the women’s soccer team, which currently plays at Stambaugh Stadium.
The university anticipates that community groups may use the soccer field for tournaments and other events.
The sports complex, on the corner of the Madison Avenue Expressway service road and Fifth Avenue, also will include a softball field and track.
The cost of the project is estimated at $4.3 million. It will be funded with university bonds and private donations and should be complete by summer.
