Free vision workshop

North Lima

The EyeCare and Vision Therapy Center of Dr. Joseph M. Pederzolli, 11955 South Ave., will host a free vision and learning workshop for parents, educators, and professionals from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Students spend more than 75 percent of school time doing intense visual work less than a foot from their eyes. Vision is an overlooked component of learning and reading problems. The workshop will help identify children whose vision restricts learning, how this affects behavior, how to build school performance by enhancing vision, how to perform assessments and tests of vision skills, and how and why vision therapy works.

To make a reservation for the event, call 330-549-9780 or 800-344-8870.

Amish retrial denied

YOUNGSTOWN

A federal judge denied a new trial Thursday in the case of an Amish man convicted of hate crimes.

Samuel Mullet Sr., 66, of Bergholz, was convicted by a federal jury in September on seven counts, including four counts of religious motivated beard- and hair-cutting attacks.

Mullet had requested an acquittal or new trial based on three arguments: insufficient evidence at trial, newly discovered evidence and the admission of certain pieces of evidence that he claimed constituted “a miscarriage of justice,” specifically an Associated Press article and evidence of defendant’s sexual relationship with one of his daughters-in-law, according to court records.

U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster denied the request.

Human Rights Day

YOUNGSTOWN
