Career center students going green

Published: Fri, December 7, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

For 30 days, students in MCCTC Science Instructor Bob Miller’s classes are participating in Project Green Challenge with more than 400 schools from around the world. And student Taylor Steiner, of Boardman, is remaining at the top of the leader board.

Project Green Challenge is a 30-day eco-lifestyle challenge for high school and college students hosted by Teens Turning Green. Each day, participants receive a set of four new challenges — green, greener, greenest and extra credit — in which students can choose challenges they want to participate in. For each challenge completed, students earn points and those points help earn prizes. In the end, the student with the most points will earn a grand prize package worth $15,000.

After hearing about the challenge online, Steiner brought the project to Miller, and now more than 50 career center students are amongst the 2,288 students participating.

“Because this is an Environmental Science class, I thought it would be appropriate,” Steiner said. In addition to Steiner, Aly Yannucci (Boardman) is taking part in the challenge.

“It’s supposed to make you think twice. You catch yourself doing things and this makes you more aware of the choices you make,” Yannucci said. The challenge has sparked students to make changes in their daily lives.

“I started composting at home and the whole family is on board,” Steiner said.

From going through the house looking for products to replace with an eco-friendly version to exploring the type of products and chemicals used in clothing manufacturing, the challenges are engaging and require students to use photos, video and social media sites in their answers.
