AfterSchool Players to perform

The AfterSchool Players will be presenting “The Nutcracker” at the AfterSchool Players Theater, located at 7206 Market Street, today at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students and free for children 4 and under. Career center hosts holiday open house

Students in the Horticulture Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have opened the school’s floral shop to the public for its annual Holiday Open House.

The event features a large assortment of silk wreaths, swags and arrangements, fresh mixed pine and spruce wreaths, fresh table centerpieces, pine roping and poinsettias all prepared by students in the program.

The floral shop will be open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday through Dec. 17.

Clothing store seeks candy donations

The Pretty and Plus Shop in Struthers will participate in the community’s Children’s Community Christmas party Dec. 15 at St. Nick’s Great Hall.

The store is seeking donations of individually-wrapped candies for children with special diet needs. Sugar-free candies, nut-free and gluten-free candies are needed. Even small trinkets or toys, books, toothbrushes or wrap bands would be accepted. Items must be at the Pretty and Plus Store by Dec. 12 in order to be included.

The store is also collecting non-perishable food items for the Youngstown Food Bank. Anyone bringing $5 worth of food items will receive a gift certificate worth $5 off any $10 purchase in the month of January.

The Pretty and Plus Store is the only plus-sized consignment store beteen the Valley and Columbus. The store offers clothing in sizes 14 and up. Hours are Wednesday through Friday, 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 10-7 in December.

Auxiliary taking reservations for Christmas luncheon

St. Anthony’s Auxiliary of Struthers will have its Christmas Luncheon Dec. 20 at 11:30 a.m. at Johnny’s Restaurant, Market Street in Boardman. Call 330-726-8019 for information.

Sulmona Valley Auxiliary to meet in Boardman

Women’s association hosts December meeting

Tri-Gold chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will hold its next meeting Dec. 12 at Rachel’s on Westchester Drive. Social time will be at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6. Topic for the evening will be Christmas Memories.

The dinner choices are chicken and greens for $21, pasta alfredo for $20 or chicken franchise for $21. Dessert will be provided by the members, who are asked to bring Christmas cookies.

Farmers National Bank hires Bannon

Breen Bannon, a new commercial lender, comes to Farmers from Huntington National Bank where he most recently was Vice President and Sales Executive of Commercial Property and Casualty Insurance. He has more than 18 years of banking experience, including 10 years in commercial lending.

A lifelong Valley resident, Bannon received his BS in Business Administration from Youngstown State University. He is active in the Downtown Kiwanis, Youngstown Warren Chamber of Commerce, and Warren Youngstown Junior Achievement. Breen is also a member of the Builders Association of Eastern Ohio and YSU Alumni Association.

Making Kids Count Christmas tree

Making Kids Count, along with other local businesses, decorated a Christmas tree at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park. Fellows Riverside Gardens is a winter wonderland through Dec. 31. Visit and enjoy the decorated trees and other holiday decorations throughout the Davis Center. On Dec. 9, 16, and 23, families can come for Winter Nights through the gardens, which will be illuminated with lights and luminaries, then warm up in the Davis center with music, hot cocoa, and sugar cookies. Share the joy of the holiday season by bringing a nonperishable food item to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Hot dog shop offers full breakfast menu

Rick’s Hot Dog Shoppe in Austintown is now offering a full breakfast menu.

In addition to hot dogs, burgers and sandwiches, the restaurant serves a full breakfast menu, including specialty omelets like Philly cheesesteak and Gyro omelets, sausage and gravy and traditional breakfast foods.

The shop is located on the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Idaho Road, near Fitch High School. The building is the former Red Barn and Jay’s Hot Dogs.

Rick’s is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The location features a dining room with big screen televisions and offers carryout orders. For more information or to order, call Rick’s at 330-953-3441.

Cookie and craft sale

The Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Ave. in Boardman, will be hosting a cookie walk, soup and craft sale today from 9 a.m. until they are sold out. There will be homemade Christmas cookies for $5 a dozen (your choice of cookies). A portion of the proceeds will support the church’s charities.

Dairy Queen hosting special price event

The Austintown Dairy Queen (146 N. Canfield Niles Road) and the Cornersburg location (3555 S. Meridian Road) are offering 12 cent Julius drinks, 12 cent DQ cones, $12.12 DQ cakes, $12.12 for 12 Buster Bars, $12 for five 12 ounce Blizzards, $12.12 for 12 chili dogs, and 12 percent off purchases on Wednesday, starting at noon.

Customers need only to tell the staff 12 things they like about Dairy Queen in order to get the discount prices.

Get free pancakes Feb. 5

IHOP is giving away free pancakes on Feb. 5 to celebrate National Pancake Day. The fundraiser aims to raise $3 million to kick off Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 30th anniversary. Visit any IHOP location to participate.

Dairy Queen Christmas events set

The Austintown Dairy Queen (Dec. 16) and the Cornersburg Dairy Queen (Dec. 21) will offer free sleigh rides pulled by live draft horses from 5-8 p.m. Santa will arrive by fire truck at 5 p.m., and there will be an outdoor fire for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, plus hot chocolate, live Christmas music, and free pictures with Santa and “Curly” the Cone.

Adopt an Angel charity

Adopt an Angel has been helping families and animal shelters in the Valley since 2008. They are currently accepting donations of all sorts — from clothing, canned goods and newspapers to toiletries. You can arrange for pick-up (for those with special circumstances only) or donations can be dropped off at any time at the North Lima Business Complex, located at 11836 South Avenue, North Lima.

Holiday fun time for 4s and 5s

The Boardman library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Stockings from Santa

Help decorate the Boardman library mantle with a family stocking. Stockings will be on display from Dec. 3-15. The story Santa will add a “surprise” and return your stocking at the puppet show on either Tuesday at 7 p.m. or Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Holiday puppet show

The Boardman library will host a holiday puppet show for the entire family on Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. Program will last one hour and after the story Santa will return the family stocking with a “surprise.” Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Pick up a stocking at the Boardman library to decorate.

Trim a tree for tweens

Decorate an edible ornament for your tree at the Boardman library on Dec. 23 at 7 p.m. The program will last one hour for tweens in grades 4-6. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library to register.

Blood drive set at library

The Boardman library will be hosting the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on Dec. 28 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital by taking blood donations to help the community.

Jigsaw puzzle swap at library

If you have finished your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another, join other jigsaw enthusiasts at the Boardman library on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and swap puzzles. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Holiday closing for libraries

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 23-25 and Dec. 30-31, Jan. 1.

P.A.R. food drive under way

The Professional Alliance of ReSalers (P.A.R.) are sponsoring a holiday food drive from Nov. 14 to Dec. 14 to benefit those in need in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties during the holiday season. Customers are asked to donate non-perishable items, such as pasta, canned goods, peanut butter, cereal and canned tuna.
