Team’s outlook: Hammerton says the Spartans five starters and expects big things from Gibbs and Tomcsanyi underneath the basket. He says too many turnovers and lack of depth are concerns.

League prediction: Hammerton sees North Canton Hoover and Uniontown Lake battling for the Federal crown.

Head coach: Bill Ritter, third season, 24-17.

Projected starters: Rachael Rosa, senior, guard, 5-6, 4 points; Jaclyn Yankle, sophomore, forward, 5-8, 2; Jamie DiDomenico, junior, guard, 5-5, 10; Macy Marlowe, senior, guard, 5-5, 6; Brie Ozenghar, senior, forward, 5-6, 6.

Other varsity players: Lauren Lottier, sophomore, guard, 5-4; McKenzie Reese, sophomore, guard, 5-6; MaKenna Ozenghar, sophomore, guard, 5-3; Nichole Webber, sophomore, forward, 5-8; Talia Tobin, sophomore, forward, 5-7.

Team’s outlook: The Cardinals return two starters. Ritter said lack of size is a concern.

Projected starters: Breonna Hudson, senior, guard, 5-3, 2 points; Chamika Kennedy, senior, guard, 5-6, 8; Breasia Bell, senior, post, 5-10, 4; La’Breah Hilton, junior, guard/post, 5-7, 2; Ashlyn Baker, senior, post, 5-9, 6.

Team’s outlook: Barnett says the Panthers will be a quick team with a strong defense. A concern is the lack of a strong outside shooter.

2011-12 record: 3-17.

Head coach: Joshua Osborne, second season, 3-17.

Projected starters: Rosealin Morris, senior, 5-3, point guard; Phoebe Nabors, junior, 5-3, guard; Ginny Burgess, sophomore, 5-7, guard; Kristen Hilliard, senior, 6-0, forward; Madison Pennington, junior, 5-7, forward.

Other varsity players: Avery Pennington, freshman, 5-7, guard; Olivia Hostetler, freshman, 5-2, guard; Leah Morell, freshman, 5-4, guard.

Team’s outlook: Heartland has a very young bench, but all starters are returning and it is the second year with the same system. Athleticism and enthusiasm will help counter the inexperienced bench and the Lions expect to get better as the season goes on.


Conference: Northeastern Buckeye Conference.

2011-12 record: 4-17.

Head coach: Renee Farina, third season, 9-33.

Projected starters: Julia Dundon, sophomore, 5-5, point guard; Katherine Stiff, senior, 5-6, guard, 9.2 points; Megan Lehwald, junior, 5-3, guard, 4.9 points; Tori Jones, sophomore, 5-9, forward, 5.1 points; Lindsey Foster, senior, 6-0, forward, 8.1 points.

Other varsity players: Ciera Trybend, senior, 6-1, forward; Raegan Meals, sophomore, 5-5, guard; Rylee Meals, sophomoe, 5-4, forward/guard; Olivia Stiff, freshman, 5-7, forward/guard.

Team’s outlook: The Quakers return two starters and have a couple of good outside shooters to go with good size inside. Salem has a young bench, so must stay healthy. The Quakers have been plagued by injuries the past two seasons.


Conference: Independent.

2011-12 record: 20-7

Head coach: Courtney Davidson, second season, 20-7.

Projected starters: Sydney Beasley, senior, guard, 5-8; Mary O’Donnell, senior, guard, 5-8; Makayla Berry, freshman, guard, 5-5; Tanaya Beachum, freshman, forward, 6-0; Janessa Rich, freshman, forward, 5-11.

Other varsity players: Xavia King, junior, forward, 5-11; Jessica McGerry, senior, guard/forward, 5-9; Angel Bowell, sophomore, guard; Dazia Velazquez, sophomore, guard; Rachel Strollo, freshman, forward.

Team’s outlook: Davidson says the Irish are inexperienced with 15 underclassmen on her roster. Height is not a problem — she says this is the tallest Ursuline team in recent years.

Head coach: Walt DeShields, eighth season, 105-54.

Projected starters: Brittany Bryte, senior, guard, 5-4, 4.3 points; Kyla Sharp, senior, guard, 5-7; Amanda Linhart, junior, forward, 5-9, 4; Pavin Heath, sophomore, forward, 5-10, 10; Melinda Trimmer, sophomore, point guard, 5-7, 11.

Other varsity players: Taryn Heath, junior, center, 5-11, 4; Erica Johnson, forward, sophomore, 5-9; Allie Garrett, junior, guard, 5-3; Lauren Martig, junior, forward, 5-9; Lea Bock, sophomore, center, 5-11.

Team’s outlook: DeShields says the Warriors need to continue to make defense their strong suit — last year’s team allowed just 35.5 points per game

League prediction: DeShields considers two-time defending champion Louisville to be the favorite in the NBC race.
