Warren Fire Department gets grant extension to retain firefighters

WARREN

The Warren Fire Department received word on Tuesday that it has been awarded a six-month extension of time to spend some of the remaining funds from its Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The extension allows the department to keep the firefighters hired with the grant through May 26, Fire Chief Ken Nussle said. About $2.5 million of the $5 million grant remains, and six more months will not be enough time to use up the remaining funds, but six months is the maximum amount of time the grant can be extended, Nussle said.

Without the extension, as many as 15 firefighters may have had to go on layoff sometime this month.
