SALEM

Authorities continue to investigate a shooting that left a woman dead and a child wounded.

The Columbiana County Sheriff’s office said Melinda Todd, 43, of Salem was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, while a 5-year-old child was critically injured from an apparent shooting at a home on state Route 45 in Salem Township. The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the wounded child.

Sheriff Raymond L. Stone said Todd and the 5-year-old child were discovered by a 12-year-old girl returning from school Monday afternoon. Officers said the girl found the woman and child after getting off the bus about 4 p.m. Stone said the girl walked into the residence near the Kent State University Salem campus and saw the woman shot to death while the boy was found outside the home.

According to reports, Todd’s ex-husband, who was scheduled to pick up the girl, called 911 and brought the injured child out to EMTs when they arrived.

Stone said the boy was conscious while being taken to Salem Community hospital. He later was transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital.

Stone said the child had brain surgery, and his condition is unknown.

The sheriff believes the children are related to Todd, but he did not confirm the relationship.

He said deputies canvassed the area and interviewed residents who may have heard gunshots.

Neighbors across the street from the scene said they did not hear any gunshots Monday but had seen children getting off the school bus daily near that location. They said Todd moved into the residence sometime over the summer, and believed the home was a rental property.

On Tuesday, members of the Columbiana County homicide task force and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation had the scene taped off.

Todd’s body was transported to the Summit County medical examiner’s office, which confirmed receiving the body, but could not release further details.

Stone said no suspects have been named, but they are investigating some people of interest.

Anyone with more information can call the Columbiana County Sheriff’s office at 330-424-7255.
