Charges filed against Warren couple for animal cruelty
Warrants were issued and charges filed Tuesday against a Hamilton Street couple accused of neglecting five dogs and four kittens found dead last week.
Tiffany Charlton, 30, and Michael Kelley, 33, formerly of 2518 Hamilton St. SW, are charged in Warren Municipal Court with nine counts each of cruelty to animals, a second-degree misdemeanor. If convicted, each faces a possible penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $750 per offense.
It might not be difficult to locate Charlton and Kelley.
Warren police, who investigated the case with the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, said citizens have called the police department since last week to indicate where Charlton and Kelley are.
An investigator with the Animal Welfare League, responding to a complaint, found five dead dogs inside the home and four dead kittens in a pet carrier outside.
Investigators believe Kelley had been at the house that morning, but authorities didn’t report seeing Charlton. An Animal Welfare League spokesperson said she believed the couple was still in the city.
A notice on the door of the home issued by the landlord, Sunshine of Warren/Trumbull, the day the dogs were found, said Charlton and Kelley were evicted for non-payment of rent.
