Radio calls show concern about Cleveland police chase

Published: Tue, December 4, 2012 @ 10:32 a.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police radio calls during a chase the ended in a barrage of 137 rounds fired at two fleeing suspects who were killed shows some officers were told to call off the pursuit.

The calls released late Monday show officers had been warned that the fleeing suspects had fired on a patrol car and might be reloading.

Family members say firing that many shots was unjustified. Officers say the driver rammed a patrol car and nearly hit an officer and force was necessary.

Investigators from the Ohio attorney general’s office and the Cuyahoga County sheriff’s department have joined the investigation.

No weapon or shell casings were found in the vehicle.

The chase Thursday night began when an officer heard a gunshot near police headquarters in downtown Cleveland.
