Gay/straight coalition plans informational meeting downtown

Staff report

There will be an informational first meeting of the newly formed Mahoning Valley Gay/Straight Coalition from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Lemon Grove, 110 W. Federal St.

The group is planning an official launch in January.

Scott Fullerton, former chairman of the Mahoning Valley Pride Center, is president and founding member of the coalition.

One of the group’s goals is to create a monthly newsletter for the community that will be available in the local bars, bookstores, and coffee houses, that will offer “GLBT events, resources and events, happening in the GLBT community and our straight allies we support,” according to a coalition press release.

The coalition is forming executive and advisory boards that will be comprised of both gay and straight men and women. There will be no dues required for membership.

All money for the coalition and its activities will be through donations, grants and fundraisers.

The coalition also plans to award a community cup for the Mahoning Valley’s GLBT bars’ participation in events and fundraising; a GLBT Organization of the Year, where they will receive a $500 donation to the group; and a community spirit award that will be given to both a GLBT and an ally person for their work in the community for the past year.

All awards will be given at a yearly banquet to be in February of each year.

For information on the initial meeting, or to volunteer to be on the executive or advisory boards, email Look for the group on Facebook and Twitter. The website will be up and running by Jan. 1.
