Eighteen students from six Columbiana County schools participated in the annual elementary art exhibit and reception at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center.

Participating schools were Joshua Dixon, Crestview Local, East Palestine, Lisbon McKinley, Salem’s Reilly and United Local elementary schools.

The annual event, which began several years ago, is a way for district art teachers to showcase and recognize the outstanding talent of their visual-arts students.

Students in the visual-arts program rarely receive recognition for their accomplishments. Art teachers from the various county elementary schools each selected three pieces of artwork to be displayed in the Columbiana County ESC “Art Gallery.”

This year, exhibited works were scored using a rubric created to align with the new Visual Arts Content Standards adopted by the Ohio Department of Education last June.

Students were scored for their artistic development, craftsmanship, creativity/originality and overall quality of work. Students were awarded for their accomplishments based on the final score.

All participating students received a certificate and had their picture taken with their artwork by Kimberly Mayer and Michelle Long, event coordinators.

Emilee Graham, a United Local fourth-grader, was awarded with a first-place Best of Show award for her outstanding rose sculpture. Haley Tilton, a Columbiana Joshua Dixon first-grader, was also presented with a Best of Show certificate for her second-place penguin watercolor scene.

Sophie Davis, from Columbiana, Kaylee Pitts, from United Local, and Matthew Nicholas, from Crestview Local, were each recognized with Honorable Mention awards.
