Health and inspiration event scheduled
McGuffey Road Church of Christ, 1101 Miami St., Youngstown, is sponsoring its sixth annual Ladies’ Health and Inspiration Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lariccia Family Community Center in Boardman Park.
The theme, “Tell Your Story: Do You Know Your Name?”, is based on Genesis 17:15. Participants will journey through Sarah’s footsteps.
A donation of $10 is requested. Active wear attire is recommended.
$12,000 in scholarships
UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Trustees awarded $12,000 in scholarships to medical students from Crawford, Lawrence, Mercer counties in Pennsylvania and Trumbull County in Ohio.
Recipients are: Jordon Bonier, son of Dr. Jerome and Jacqueline Bonier, Hermitage, Pa.; Megan Ferderber, daughter of Scott and Virginia Ferderber of Grove City, Pa.; Michael Forte, son of Alex and Bridget Forte of Hubbard; Jeremy Gebhart, son of W. John and Patricia Gebhart of New Castle, Pa.; Teagan Hayes, daughter of Timothy and Marcia Riggs of Meadville, Pa.; and Maryann Wozniak, daughter of Henry and Anna Wozniak of Phillipsburg, N.J.
Paperless patient records
UPMC Horizon and UPMC Northwest have joined 10 other UPMC hospitals in using comprehensive electronic medical records (EMRs), a component in providing higher-quality patient care, according to HIMSS Analytics, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). It scores hospitals based on their progress in completing eight stages to create a paperless patient record environment.
Sharon Regional Hospital has added Dr. Armais V. Akovbyan, who specializes in COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, lung cancer, shortness of breath, and cough; critical care (caring for patients in intensive care); and sleep disorders (including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness), to its staff.
Dr. Akovbyan is associated with pulmonologists, Drs. Michael Panariello and Neven Kosic, in Sharon Pulmonary Specialists, 752 Brookshire Drive, Hermitage, Pa.
Dr. Esra Karslioglu, endocrinologist with Horizon Endocrinology-UPMC, will present “Diabetes Treatments: How Far We Have Come” Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, 875 N. Hermitage Road.
She will provide an overview of available diabetes medications and insulin and discuss the latest technology in diabetes treatments, including insulin pumps and constant glucose monitoring.

New senior rehab unit
Briarfield of Boardman will mark the opening of its new rehabilitation unit with a new name and become Vista Center of Boardman. Since the change of ownership in 2011, the center has been operating under its registered name.
