Michelle Obama to visit W.Pa. air unit set to close

PITTSBURGH (AP) — First Lady Michelle Obama was scheduled to speak at the 911th Air Wing outside Pittsburgh later this afternoon to recognize veterans and military families, but there’s a hitch in the usual script.

The Obama Administration recently announced plans to shut the 911th Air Wing in 2013, setting off widespread protests in the surrounding community.

Supporters of the Air Wing feel that what the first lady says—or doesn’t say— could have a big impact on western Pennsylvania voters in November’s elections.

The visit is supposed to honor military families, but some are asking how that message can possibly fit with plans to eliminate the air wing.
