Youngstown a good place to raise a family, Forbes says

Youngstown is known for having the highest poverty rate and some of the cheapest housing in the nation.

The city can now add another notch to its belt, at least according to Forbes, which ranked Youngstown as the fourth-best city to raise a family.

“Still feeling that rust belt economic pain that’s undermining incomes, but affordable with good schools,” the website’s description read.

Forbes ranked America’s 100 largest metro areas by median income, overall cost of living, commuting delays, crime statistics, school quality, and housing affordability.

Oh yes it's wonderful here in the hood. Was this based on the fact that kevlar vests are readily available since the pullout in Iraq?

I love the city but what criteria did they use to determine the schools are good? Even the state's opinion is only that they are improving from being the worst in Ohio.

Just like the bad lists we've been on over the years, they are looking at the Youngstown area, not just the city.

I wonder why people are so quick to doubt this list, but are also so quick to take those "most miserable" lists (from the same publication) as gospel?

Note to those who have never lived anywhere else- Youngstown area is not the armpit of the world. We have great amenities, excellent health care facilities, great restaurants, cultural activities and it is affordable to raise a family here. Traffic is miniscule. Please try and expand your worldview to include something beyond navel gazing.

Seriously? Maybe Youngstown is a better place to raise a family than Bagdad but not by much. All that is missing is the car bombs

Could not agree more with commyliberal. It always fascinates me how so many people can be so complacent that they would rather live in misery than change their situation. Imagine how much better this community would be if all the "haters" just left and saw for themselves that the grass isn't always greener...We are our own worst enemies some times. The Mahoning Valley is a wonderful place to raise a family.

Is this the same Forbes.com that in February of 2011 ranked Youngstown #14 on the list of America's 20 most miserable cities? Way to stay consistent Forbes.
