Allegiant will charge for carry-on bags
Allegiant Air, which offers flights to leisure destinations through the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, has instituted a new baggage policy.
The policy now requires customers to either stow their carry-on bag below the seat in front of them or pay $15 to $35 to stow it overhead.
Carry-on fees will be $15 on most routes, the company said, but Dan Dickten, director of aviation at the local airport, said he didn’t know what the fee would be for flights here.
Allegiant becomes the second airline to charge for carry-on bags.
The maximum $35 fee will be for passengers who pay their fees at the airport. The lower prices will be charged for fees paid during the booking process. Previous bookings will not be affected.
According to an email from Allegiant, the maximum size for a carry-on that will fit under the seat is 7 inches high by 15 inches wide by 16 inches deep. Examples are purses, briefcases, laptops etc. Allegiant said.
Carry-on bags that can go in the overhead bin, which now cost up to $35, can be no larger than 9 inches high by 14 inches wide by 22 inches deep and have a maximum weight of 25 pounds. Examples are roll-aboard bags, garment bags etc., Allegiant said.
Checked bags cost $15 to $35 and can be up to 80 linear inches (meaning total of height, width and depth) and up to 40 pounds, Allegiant said.
Dickten said the bottom line regarding Allegiant is that it’s “still a good service. It’s still a good deal.”
Dickten added that he is in talks with Allegiant regarding adding more flights to the local airport. It currently offers flights to Orlando/Sanford and St. Petersburg/ Clearwater in Florida and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
