Youngstown postal facilities considered for closure

Published: Thu, September 15, 2011 @ 10:48 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

The U.S. Postal Service today announced that Youngstown’s processing and distribution facilities will be under consideration for possible closure.

At stake: Potential losses of 500 local jobs and $500,000 in lost city income taxes.

If Youngstown’s facilities were to close, their workload could be shifted to Akron or Cleveland, a post office spokesman said.

But Akron was also listed as one of about 250 potential study sites on Thursday, as was Canton, the next nearest facility.

The postal service previously announced in July that the Youngstown facilities were being considered for the study.

Postal workers plan to rally at 11:30 a.m. Friday outside the main post office at 99 S. Walnut St. to voice their opposition to the possible closures.

Dom Corso, president of the American Postal Workers’ Union Local 443, which represents postal clerks, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The postal service, facing a $9.2 billion deficit this year, said the 250 processing facilities could be slated for consolidation or closure, cutting mail processing equipment in half, decreasing the transportation network or adjusting workforce sizes.

You're way off crispin. Their prices are cheap compared to UPS or Fedex, And are you seriously complaining that it costs 44 cents to send a letter?

USPS has 2 problems. Workforce is WAY too big for the shrinking volume of mail, and too many duplicated services in close areas. Closing branches is a start, and needs to be paired with a workforce reduction, even though it will unfortunately put a ton of people out of a job.

Closing Youngstown’s processing and distribution facilities would only accelerate the decay of the city . Beyond the job loss now, luring companies dependent on mail services to locate here would be impossible .

There are more reasons that the USPS is going by the wayside. Email, texting and online banking. I speak with people out of the country via social media, text and sometimes email. It's instant, it's cheap. Also I'd rather click and send to pay bills than write out checks, write envelopes and buy stamps. And most are electronic payments...1 to 2 day posting to the account.

Did you ever try & call the Ytown facility?
They NEVER answer the phone & don't return calls.
They allow vagrants to panhandle.
The A/C is blasting in the summer & it's hot as a greenhouse in the winter.
Another facility is being ruined by a Union.
Rid this facility of the Union & make it competitive, if you employees REALLY seek to retain the facility. Strike, march on the Union. Demonstrate you have the local communities best interest & your jobs as the priority. The Union is going to lead to your unemployment. Take a stand for America & your employment.

With shrinking mail volume, increased costs of fuel, and huge deficits, something radical must be done. Consolidation of sorting into fewer locations is necessary as are reduction in delivery. Jobs will be lost but are they really needed to preform their mandated services? The USPS must adapt with the changing times. And, in case you haven't noticed, the City of Youngstown no longer holds a place of national importance. No reason to hold on to needless employees.
