YOUNGSTOWN

A lovers quarrel was listed by police as the motive for the shooting death early Sunday of an East Avondale Avenue man.

It was the second shooting death in the city this weekend.

Killed Sunday about 1:53 a.m. was Jack T. Manigaul, 40, of 23 E. Avondale Ave. His girlfriend, Tamicka Riley, 34, of the same address, was injured but not shot in the incident.

She suffered an injury to the back of her head when she was struck with the gun used to shoot Manigaul in the head, according to police reports.

Police said Riley’s estranged boyfriend, Marco Cardenas, 22, of Plymouth Ave., was arrested in the shooting about 2:38 a.m. near the Pyatt Street Market across from 56 Pyatt after he had called 911 and said he was not going to jail.

Killed Saturday was Tequon J. Sharpe, 20, who was shot in the head in his apartment at 59 E. Judson St. The motive for that killing is not known, and no arrests had been made as of Sunday.

If both killings are ruled homicides, they will be Youngstown’s 15th and 16th in 2011.

According to police, Cardenas knocked on the front door of Riley’s home, and when a juvenile unlocked the door, Cardenas pushed his way in and went upstairs to an attic bedroom where Manigaul and Riley were. The two juveniles in the house reported hearing several shots and then the victim ran down the steps and collapsed on the floor.

According to police, the shooter came down and said, “Just let me finish him,” but one of the juveniles struggled with him and pushed him out the door.

While Cardenas was upstairs, he struck Riley with the same gun he used to shoot Manigaul, according to reports. When police arrived, she was sitting on a couch holding a cloth to her bleeding head. She was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. Her condition is unknown.

In the meantime, while police were responding to the suspect’s residence on Plymouth, they were notified he had been seen near the Pyatt Street Market. When officers got out of their cruisers, Cardenas, armed with a handgun, came toward them and said: “You’d better shoot me. You’re going to have to kill me,” reports said.

However, Cardenas was arrested at gunpoint without further incident.

He was taken to the police department for questioning and then to the Mahoning County Jail for incarceration awaiting his municipal court appearance Tuesday.

However, the jail refused to admit Cardenas because he had aggravated a previous injury; instead, the suspect was taken to St. Elizabeth’s.

"According to police, Cardenas knocked on the front door of Riley’s home, and when a juvenile unlocked the door, Cardenas pushed his way in and went upstairs to an attic bedroom where Manigaul and Riley were."

The killing happened at 1:53 a.m. At that hour one should not open the door for anyone .

When are we going to have another criminal justice summit at St. Domnicks Church, where all the politicians get their sound bite and photo op?

girlfriend? boyfriend? lovers quarrel? Friends and lovers do not murder each other, and adults are not girls and boys. You need to name your demons correctly in order to drive them out.

Everyone here seems to be missing the real point here...what the blue blazes is this 34 year old WOMAN doing messing around with 20 and 22 year old BOYS? So now one is dead and the other will be in jail for probably the rest of his life and she's going to claim she's a "victim."

Yeah. Whatever.

I'm pretty sure she's not Demi Moore.

Hey uneducated Drone- Get your butt out on the streets of Youngstown. How can police stop all the thugery when the problem lies with all the irresponsible idiots having children. No father, mom in bed with her latest boyfriend and the kid out doing everything he's not supposed to do. Let's put blame where it belongs pal. When the steel mills left Youngstown so did decency.
