Staff report

Allegiant Air has extended two flight routes out of Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport into next spring.

Flight tickets to St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Fla., and Orlando-Sanford International Airport are available on a weekly basis through May 15, according to the airline’s website, www.allegiantair.com.

The St. Petersburg/ Clearwater route previously was scheduled through the end of 2011.

The Las Vegas-based Allegiant determines flight routes and schedules approximately six months in advance based on seasonality and demand.

Flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C., which ceased Aug. 14, aren’t expected to return until at least May.

Aviation Director Dan Dickten said the airport is trying to secure additional frequency on current routes and is hoping to add additional lines, including daily service, in early 2012.

Enplanements at the airport were up nearly 50 percent during the first six months of this year.

In the past I have flown Allegiant Air several times for travel to Youngstown, Ohio. Let me just say that I have never been a great proponent of this lousy airline's service and obscene methods of squeezing every last nickel out of their customers ($10 for a reserved seat, $5 for priority boarding, $15 booking fee unless you book at the airport, $2 for a glass of water in flight, etc., etc. etc), however, due to the convenience of flying directly to Youngstown, I capitulated and used Allegiant, even though the fares aren't as low as everyone thinks.
Just for example, on my most recent trip to Youngstown, March 21, 2012, to attend a funeral, the fare was $178.79 (not that attractive for a one way ticket). The fare for the return flight would have cost me $215.00 on Allegiant Air. So instead of caving in to this ridiculous fare, as well as their crummy service, I opted to use a shuttle service to drive to Pittsburgh ($32.40 plus a $5 tip for the driver) and flew back to Tampa on United Airlines for $124.10 for a grand total of $161.50 (I even had a free glass of orange juice on the plane).
Even though I never held this two-bit airline in high esteem, I have recommended Allegiant Air to friends and family because of the convenience, as mentioned above. So now, what do they do? Instead of improving service, they've decided to screw the customers out of more money by charging for carry on bags. But rest assured, their spokesman, Brian Davis has really shown how generous Allegiant Air can be by stating that passengers will be allowed to carry on a briefcase or a purse-- FOR FREE.
You can bet that I will never fly Allegiant Air again, nor will I recommend it to anybody.
Given Allegiant Air's arrogance, I doubt that it matters to them.
