Frank Zappa ensemble Free concert will span career

Staff report

The Dana School of Music will present a free concert featuring the Youngstown State University Frank Zappa Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble 2, both directed by David Morgan, at 8 p.m. Nov. 28 in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room, on the YSU campus.

The 11-piece Frank Zappa Ensemble’s goal is to get more people interested in the compositions of the late Zappa.

“Frank Zappa is one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century,” said John Anthony, second-year jazz graduate assistant and the lead guitarist of the ensemble.

“The downside is that many music students, as well as the general audience, have not been exposed to his music.”

The concert will span Zappa’s 27-year career and will include “Peaches En Regalia,” “The Yellow Snow Suite” and “Echidna’s Arf (Of You).”

“We wanted to pick selections that not only challenged each member of the ensemble, but helped to give a well-rounded look at Zappa compositional techniques,” said Anthony. “This includes odd meter, technical virtuosity, improvisation and humor.”

The YSU Jazz Ensemble II will open the concert with a short program of music by Michael Mossman and Slide Hampton, as well as selections from Morgan’s original composition, “The Way of the Sly Man.”
