11-year Niles police veteran sworn in as road-patrol captain

Staff report

The retirement of Bruce Simeone as Niles police chief allowed Robert Hinton to become the city’s new chief but also made room for Jay Holland to take Hinton’s place as captain in charge of the road- patrol division.

Holland, who has been a lieutenant in the department since 2006, was sworn in as captain by Mayor Ralph Infante on Tuesday.

Holland, 37, originally from Warren, began working for the department in 2000.

His responsibilities also will include supervision of the police department’s dispatching operation, which also serves Weathersfield Township.

Holland, who was accompanied by his wife, Jennefer during the ceremony, said his goal is to “assist the chief and the mayor with the administration of the police department and to make my friends and family proud.”

Hinton said of Holland: “He has all of the traits you want in a leader.”
