Nonprofit agency seeks to buy Kress Building downtown

YOUNGSTOWN

The owner of a downtown agency that provides job skills and education to the mentally and physically impaired is looking to expand to a long-vacant West Federal Street building.

Jimmy Sutman, who founded and runs the Purple Cat in 2003, needs additional space and has a tentative agreement to buy the Kress Building, 111 W. Federal St., from the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp.

For the deal to be finalized, Sutman said he’d need a $1.2 million Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit and a Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund grant of about $750,000. The historic tax credit announcement is expected Dec. 31, he said.

So when this building is all fixed up and the nonprofit runs in to money problems or decides that the building isnt what it needs or can afford somebody will make alot of money at the taxpayers expense

This guy does TREMENDOUS things for our community, specifically for those developmentally challenged.
The purple cat is a well known nonprofit here and has multiple locations... Providing employment and other services for those entrusted to the agency

Well cuervo, you and the others are all correct to a degree. I know that he is a good man who means well and helps some of the developmentally challenged. I'm not sure his programs or impact in the community is great however.
I also agree 100% with the comments of others. Purple Cat is almost totally dependent on donations, government grants, loans and subsidies - all disappearing fast! He has no income producing business model to sustain loan payments when he runs out of "free" money. We don't need more failures like that in Youngstown - even if they are nice guys.
