Organizers of tonight’s “Thrill on the Hill” card at St. Lucy’s Banquet Center had been frantically looking for a replacement to fight Giuriceo, the light welterweight from Struthers, after the original opponent, Rod Salka, was scratched for medial reasons on Tuesday.
Dedrick Bell (6-7, 4 KOs) out of Memphis will be the new opponent.
“I honestly do not know a thing about Dedrick, other than the fact that he is durable and taller than me by a good 4 inches,” said Giuriceo. “He’s an orthodox fighter and I fight that way so we should be fine in that area.”
Frankie Duarte, who helped train Giuriceo for five weeks in Los Angeles, doesn’t foresee a problem in fighting an opponent on such short notice.
“Jake is in great shape. He’s actually in better shape and more prepared than he was for his [February] bout against Angel Hernandez at the Byzantine Center,” said Duarte.
The eight-round Giuriceo-Bell fight will take place before the 10-round WBF light welterweight title clash between Chris Fernandez and Miguel Gonzalez.
“Fighting on such short notice is not a problem for me because I don’t take time off from the gym,” said Bell. “I’m in shape, ready to go and looking forward to it. It will be an interesting night.”
