Signs honoring Negro Leagues unveiled on Pa. span

HOMESTEAD, Pa. (AP) — Eighteen signs honoring the Pittsburgh area’s two Negro League baseball teams and some of their key players have been unveiled on a bridge already named for one of the teams — the Homestead Grays.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Homestead Mayor Betty Esper unveiled the 18 signs today along the Homestead Grays Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River between the mayor’s once-mighty steel town with Pittsburgh.

The first sign unveiled pictures of Josh Gibson, a Hall of Fame star who played for the Grays as well as their rivals, the Pittsburgh Crawfords.

Nine signs depicting players, owners and the teams’ logos are on each side of the bridge.

Motorists will see signs featuring the Grays as they drive into Homestead, and signs depicting the Crawfords as they drive into Pittsburgh.
