Blessing of pets

Park Vista Retirement Community, 1216 Fifth Ave., plans a blessing of pets service at 2 p.m. Monday in the gathering room. The Rev. Alan Hutchison, chaplain, will bless pets as a celebration of the service and loving bond that they provide in the lives of their owners. Then, pets and owners will parade through the facility and visit with residents. This is the kick-off event for National Nursing Home Week. Residents, staff and the community are invited.

Ministry program

The Youngstown Chapter of Igniting New Life Ministries International, an interdenominational ministry, will host guest speaker Pastor Suzie Hammersmith of Agape Church of Prayer in Bowling Green, Ohio, during a meeting May 16 in the multipurpose room at Boardman Park. Fellowship will begin at 6 p.m. with the ministry at 6:30. Pastor Hammersmith founded and is head of the Ministry of Manisfested Dimensions of the Prophetic.

Group study offered

YOUNGSTOWN

Cornersburg Baptist Church, 3898 Tippecanoe Road, will offer a 12-week group study, “More Than Conquerors,” starting May 15. The study is open to the first 15 people who register. The last day to join is May 22. Classes will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Sundays. The cost is $10 per person for materials. The study will focus on the root of personal struggles and the power of God’s truth. The study is for anyone who wishes to break free from any kind of addiction, past hurts or broken relationships. Fatherhood summit

The first Trumbull County Fatherhood Leadership Summit is planned from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave. The program will focus on the roles fathers play and ways to pool resources to help fathers. A free lunch will be provided. The monthly diocese Infant Jesus of Prague Mass will be May 18 at Sacred Heart Church, Lincoln Avenue. The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass at 10.

Musical celebration

The sixth annual, ”Come, Christians, Join to Sing — A Musical Celebration,” will be presented at 7 p.m. May 15 at First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Jefferson St. The program will feature sacred, traditional, gospel and contemporary Christian music directed by Steve Pridon and performances by the Celebration Ringers and Singers of the church. Also performing will be Faithful Bells of Westfield Presbyterian Church, Sheet and Tube Brass Quartet and vocalists Cindy McMillin and Allison Rodgers. Refreshments will follow the program.

Even if one buys into the notion that humans have "souls" - which I do not - does anyone really believe cats and dogs have them? What possible purpose would a "blessing" serve, even if we assume God exists?

To each their own, I guess, but it sounds like religious superstition to me. Have fun with it.
