The 24th Annual K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament will get under way on Friday with 26 bouts at the I.T.A.M. Banquet Center, 115 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown.
The event, open to all high school boys and girls, has traditionally drawn entrants from the Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties as well as Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania.
This year, 44 schools are represented with 52 set to fight on opening night.
“With over 80 students already entered, this year’s tournament and most especially the first week’s card, looks to be both competitive and action-packed,” said Chuck Nelson, tournament founder and director. “There are gridiron and wrestling standouts and the fans will be very pleased with the match-ups.”
The double-elimination tournament consists of three divisions: underclass, upperclass and female.
The underclass division showcases boxing hopefuls from the ninth & 10th grades. The upperclass division features 11th & 12th graders.
Bouts are three rounds each 45 seconds in duration with a one-minute
break between rounds.
“The tournament is designed for beginners with safety as our highest priority,” Nelson said. “Short rounds, extra-padded headgear and 18-ounce gloves help keep participants safe.
“Competent referees and corner men remain an integral part of the operation in order to ensure the safety of all boxers,” Nelson said.
In upperclass action, Nathan Mosure of Canfield will meet Troy Sigurani of Boardman in a light heavyweight clash. Defending champion Mardell Halas of Columbiana returns to take on Thomas Sheets of Salem in a welterweight battle.
Halas played football and basketball for the Clippers while Siguani is the nephew of professional boxer, Kenny Sigurani, a former WBF welterweight world champion.
Other featured upperclass bouts include heavyweight Ryan Fisher of Austintown Fitch, who will take on Christian Kountz of MCCTC while Connor Hoelzel of Canfield tangles with Brandon Jones of Life Skills Academy in one of two cruiserweight fights.
The other cruiserweight scrap pits Dante DeLorenzo of Canfield as he goes up against Mike Stanley of Liberty.
Campbell Memorial’s Zak Kountz will take on Alex Tomaino of Jackson-Milton in another welterweight battle.
The lone female bout will feature Austintown Fitch’s Shayla Demar against Nicole Whitcher of Salem in a junior welterweight scrap.
Underclass fights expected to draw plenty of attention include Shane Nuzzi of Niles against Dustin Garlock of Warren Harding in a heavyweight clash.
Cardinal Mooney’s Billy Aaron will meet Dylan Miles of Lakeview in light heavyweight action.
Tickets cost $9 for students and $10 for adults. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the first bout hitting the bell at 7 p.m.
