Youngstown protester: 'This is what democracy looks like'

Published: Sat, March 26, 2011 @ 9:55 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

Bitterly cold winds didn’t prevent hot protesters from showing their opposition to Gov. John R. Kasich.

About 20 protesters gathered at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church on the city’s North Side and worked their way downtown to protest in front of the Thomas D. Lambros Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse on Market Street.

One of the protesters shouted, “This is what democracy looks like.”

Youngstown State University’s March Against Madness was combined with the Ohio March Against Madness, as well as the International Women’s Walk for Choice.

Similar marches took place at or near college campuses throughout Ohio Saturday.

It may well be what democracy looks like.
But we don't live in a democracy, and never have.
Fortunately.
We live in a federal republic. Intelligent people know this.
Evidently, no one bothered to tell these brickbrains that.
Nor that loud mouths do not generally come coupled to to great intelligence nor wisdom.

Who the hell are you? Clearly, you're spending your time on Vindy threads, as if you're better than these people you're denigrating? At least I know I have a problem by my hanging out in here and entertaining arguments with stupid people.

John Kasich and the GOP Legislature are so right with pushing for samaller state government and less spending on cadillac healthcare and golden pension plans for public employees.. The public employee unions and their democrat supports are so wrong. The person is correct though, “This is what democracy looks like”, and that's why the majority of Ohio voters said lets go in a different direction last Novemeber and we are. Kudos to John Kasich for staying the course towards smaller government and less spending!

No, R1200GS, you were closer the first time - the Bible-thumping right believes they have God in their pocket.

The protester in question shouted what he did because shouting "This is what the democratic process looks like!" was too cumbersome. True, we do not live in a democracy - we live in a democratic republic. That doesn't mean democracy has nothing to do with the way we run our government.

The previous governor already reduced the size of state government, as well as employee benefits.
The public pension systems already had reduction plans prepared to present to the legislature before John Kasich stepped into the Governor's Mansion...uh, I mean, his public car.

The only difference with John Kasich is that his mission is to remove the voice of the working people from their work place.

"The United States is not a Democracy" is just a talking point of the right wing media puppets.

But I think R1200GS is right. We created corporations. They are entities that exist under governmental rules. But we don't control them. They have replaced the citizens in decision-making for this country.

We have become their subjects, hopefully not their slaves.

We try not to "burden" corp. with responsibilities like taxes and caring for our infrastructure and resources. At the same time, the Supreme Court says they are free to campaign in elections, though 0f course, most large corporations are multi-national now.

So I think the U.S. has left the "Republic" stage, just as Rome did. We are now Empire of the U.S. Inc.

And John Kasich is a middle manager.

Education_Voter, excellent take on what is happening today. Hard to believe that the richest 1% of the population is being successful in determining the course of events for all the rest of us. And the shills that pine for them are duped into believing Faux News, Rush, Hannity and the rest to their own detriment. Everyone should see this and then consider what you stand for:

The next march will be on the prisons and they will be demanding freedom for the oppressed inside .
