Lily McElroy, owner of Our Family Restaurant, next to the Youngstown State University campus, said she’s concerned that the governor’s budget cuts will adversely impact her customers and her business.
About 75 percent of the customers at her Hispanic/soul food restaurant on West Wood Street are either public employees or students.
The budget “puts their jobs at risk and that will hurt my business and other small businesses,” McElroy said today.
Gov. John Kasich’s budget proposal cuts Local Government Fund money to counties, cities, villages and townships by 50 percent over a two-year period, beginning July 1.
The governor has said other changes he’s proposing, including giving local entities much more control over contract negotiations with public workers, will help off-set those costs.

And HOW will that effect her business??
If her business relies primarily on students and public employees getting money from the government and then spending it at her establishment, then I say she has a problem. But it's not the government's fault. That's quite a stretch. I don't understand that. I say she's just another person looking for a free government hand out. Why doesn't she go out and work for it. I certainly would have come up with a better business plan if I were in business. Give me a break!!!!.
Lily, Please- look at the big picture - the state needed a reformed budget - like it or not- Restaurant business is challenging. It looks like you better step up your game if you are concerned about a segment of your customers spending habits changing. That's business. Also I wonder what kind of tax brakes were given to Lily to open a business in youngstown city limits.
Hispanic/Soul food restaurant. Notchomamma?
Looks like the Vindy is scraping the bottom, looking for any negative story about Gov. Kasich and his plans to help all Ohioians. Most of the articles last week about the cuts were for the most part without rebuttal from those in favor of the cuts, and why it must be done and what it will accomplish. Unions must be doing what they do best, pressuring the Vindy. JMHO.
When layoffs hit poorly-run GM Lordstown, the local restaurants take a hit. When the poorly-run Campbell and Youngstown steel mills shut down, the local restaurants take a hit. I love the fact that Gov. Kasich is running the poorly-run State Of Ohio in the same manner as a private business. An $8 billion deficit calls for across the board cuts that last for years to come. Unions are not exempt from these cuts, and putting the squeeze on rip-off collective bargaining rights ensure many future years of a balanced budget. A heartfelt Thank You, Governor, for relieving us taxpayers and local communities from these union-thug tactics!
i know lilly and her family. they never took something for free. they worked for everything they have.
I've eaten in Lily's establishment and can agree, daddy218, that she and her family are hard workers. These lovely people in here are simply not the sort who can understand how somehow cutting the budget by cutting public worker's pay and benefits is actually going to hurt the small business owners, who those public workers usually patronize, but when they have to tighten their belts more because of this, will start packing their lunches and dinners. In the end, it hurts small business as well as public workers. It hurts a whole lot more people than anyone wants to imagine.
Tigerlily, daddy218, bsafeandproud give me a break. Rock on borlyie, you nailed it. To bad Tigerlily, daddy218, bsafeandproud haven't caught on yet.
heartless people will be sure to get the picture in the end. this is a crazy world with people who just don't care about one another. i feel sorry for the heartless.
