City schools are the answer

City schools are the answer

Your March 10 article “Pop- ulation Plunge” has Mayor Williams trying to find a rational reason for the exodus from Youngstown between 2000 and 2010. I find it interesting that nowhere in the article does anyone mention the schools.

My wife and I loved our home on the West Side. We were next to Mill Creek Park and used to take our children on walks to the Lily Pond and the surrounding trails. But in 2001 we were part of that exodus. My reason for leaving my home in Youngstown was that as a father of four children I needed to make sure they could get a quality education. Sending four children to Catholic school with it’s yearly increases in tuition was out of the question.

We are happy with our decision that we made 10 years ago, but will admit that we get a little sad when we drive past our old home and remember the times we spent there with our young children. So forget the steel mills and the lack of jobs and look at the schools as a reason families are leaving the city.

A new threat to democracy

In the wake of World War II, a German pastor succinctly summarized the path to hell in his destroyed nation by stating that “first they came after the socialists and I did not speak up because I was not a socialist; then they came after the trade unionists and I did not speak up because I was not a trade unionist; then they came after the Jews and I did not speak up because I was not a Jew; finally, they came after me and there was no one left to speak up.”

In contemporary America, socialists have already been reduced to near extinction; recently a Congressional hearing went after Muslims (aka the scapegoats of our times) big time; and SB 5 is designed to silence organized labor in Ohio and beyond permanently.

What’s left to defend democracy in America? Plenty. The shameless and lawless tsunami drowning democracy in Republican-controlled states like ours has stirred a much more powerful force out its slumber. The Spirit of America that once rose against British tyranny and German fascism will also crush this homegrown tyranny. Otherwise the hundreds of thousands of Americans who gave their lives in the fight against fascism will have died in vain. Which side are you on?
