Monstrola vies for Groom of Year
Mark Monstrola, meteorologist for 21 WFMJ-TV, is one of the 16 contestants in Brides magazine’s Groom of the Year online contest.
Monstrola, of Poland, is engaged to Shannon McGarry, also of Poland. McGarry works for St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Boardman in the nuclear department.
The couple, who met at a charity event for Hospice of the Valley, have set a Sept. 17 wedding date.
To enter the contest, men had to submit an essay that explains when they knew their girlfriend was the one they wanted to marry, and why they should be Groom of the Year.
“Shannon is my best friend, and I would never be able to live up to the title Groom of the Year if it wasn’t for an amazing woman like her,” Monstrola wrote in his essay.
He was informed a couple of weeks ago that he was selected as one of the contestants.
The winner of the Groom of the Year contest receives a honeymoon package, a big-screen television and a wedding band. Voters are also eligible to win prizes.

The contest is modeled after a March Madness NCAA basketball tournament bracket. Voters must select eight choices for the first round, and the eight winners will advance to the next round.
The deadline to vote for round one is 10 a.m. Monday. Round two voting will begin at 2 p.m. Monday.
Voting for the final round, which will pit the two remaining contestants against each other, will begin March 28.
