711 Corned Beef Challenge

Staff report

POLAND

This St. Patrick’s Day, the new Kravitz Deli inside Poland Library has issued the "711 Corned Beef Challenge” to the original Kravitz Deli in Liberty. Whichever location sells the most corned beef this week can decide which charity receives the $250 pot of gold.

The Poland site picked Hospice of the Valley, while the Liberty location went with the Stambaugh Auditorium renovation fund. Jack Kravitz, president of Kravitz Delicatessen, said he will double the pot if the locations together sell more than 7,000 pounds of corned beef. Both locations will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, selling corned beef, reuben sandwiches and corned- beef and cabbage dinners.

Last St. Patrick’s Day season, Kravitz sold more than 5,000 pounds of corned beef at its Liberty location.

Kravitz has scheduled a number of events, beginning Friday and continuing through St. Patrick’s Day.

Some of the highlights are:

Corned Beef Festival kickoff party beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Lemon Grove, 122 W. Federal St., Youngstown, featuring bagpipers, Irish dancers and County Mayo.

A post-parade party at the Poland Deli on Sunday afternoon, with the Blarney Tones.

A pre-St. Patrick’s Day party March 16, with County Mayo, from 6 to 9 p.m.
