HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley
HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way Agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement, and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business in the Center for Non-profit Excellence and our main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. Hands On is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact that volunteering can have on our community. Meet and greet: We encourage volunteers and partner organizations to come and learn more about the services HOVN has to offer. This casual platform gives us an opportunity to reach people beyond traditional office hours. Volunteers also can learn more about our Lead Volunteer Training opportunities during these meetings. Our next meetings are 4 to 7 p.m. March 24 and April 14, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. Call the Boardman office if you plan to attend.

HOVN Youth Volunteer Corps Summer of Service: Committed students and Lead Volunteers needed to participate in the Summer Service Initiatives. If you are between 13 and 18 and would like to be part of the service projects occurring this summer, contact Gretchen Brown at 330-782-5877 for more details or e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Event volunteers: If you’re interested in being put on a call list for episodic events, call 330-782-5877. We will call you with each referral and you will have the choice to accept or decline.
Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation: Seeking 10 or more volunteers to assist in scheduled garden workdays, block projects, house boarding events and other special neighborhood projects. The events are scheduled one or two times per month with a time commitment of five hours.
YNDC event coordinator: If you enjoy leading others, two event coordinators are needed for about five hours per week to assist staff in coordinating, set up and clean up after neighborhood workdays and special events. Coordinators direct residents and volunteers as needed, with staff support.
YNDC garden staff: Seeking five garden staff for the community gardens in the Idora and Lincoln Park neighborhoods to check gardens for pests and perform basic maintenance while respecting individual plots. The time commitment is three hours per week. Volunteers should have gardening experience and knowledge and strong communication skills. Staff will orient volunteers to garden procedures and provide educational resources.
Meals on Wheels Volunteer drivers: Seeking volunteers to pack and deliver food to home-bound Mahoning County residents. Morning deliveries are made weekdays to a route of eight to 10 homes. Volunteer uses own car; license and insurance required. Contact Marlene Braunlich at 330-782-5877.
Girl Scouts of NE Ohio program leader: Individuals needed to work directly with girls 5 to 17. Volunteers must have enthusiasm and the ability to generate girls’ interest and curiosity during different programs ranging from financial literacy to self- esteem to physical fitness.
Warren City Schools Foundation database cleaning/ maintenance: Assist in the cleaning of their database that is in MicroSoft Excel.
Someplace Safe data entry: Updating contact information for donors, entering contact information for new donors or others who are inquiring about the organization. Training on the computer program will be available for volunteers.
Donation center organizer: Volunteer to organize new and current donations. Donations include clothing, cleaning supplies and household items. Volunteer needs to have good organizational skills and be able to lift 25 pounds.
Handyman: Volunteer that is able to do general handyman duties such as fixing electric switches, repairing fixtures, hang banister railings and general appliance repair. Also, a volunteer is needed for general building and grounds maintenance such as power washing, painting/staining and lawn management.
110 Foundation: The newly formed 110 Foundation was created to support nonprofit organizations in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties that demonstrate a financial need and share the desire to improve and rehabilitate lives. If you are interested in nonprofit- board service, the foundation has these board opportunities available: treasurer, secretary, member with community- relations experience and a member with fundraising experience.
