Students usually show pride in their school by attending a few basketball games. Lexi Kaleel is spirited enough to attend all of them.
The senior is Canfield High School’s Big Red — the school mascot. Kaleel is this year’s basketball mascot, and to do her job, she stands with the cheerleaders and roots for Canfield’s boys’ basketball players.
Whoever gets to wear the famed cardinal suit, whether for football or basketball season, has to be able to muster enough spirit to pump up the crowd. For Kaleel, someone who describes herself as naturally outgoing and “school spirited,” it isn’t very hard to act the part.
She said the best part is “being out there with the team and cheering on the boys and hoping they’ll win.”
During the games, those in the crowd watch Kaleel, but are never able to see who is inside the costume. But the fans aren’t the only ones with a limited view.
“You can’t really see out of it and it gets hot in there,” said Keleel.
