Program will help contestants square off in crossword tourney

What’s a four-letter word for “small but useful pieces of practical advice”?

If you guessed tips, you’re coming “across” as someone who should get “down” to the library for a session providing pointers to entrants in an upcoming Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

The free program will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Boardman Library. It will provide tips about crossword puzzles in general and about how to compete in the tournament

The Crossword Puzzle Tournament and Fundraiser, for teens and adults, will take place at 10 a.m. March 12 in the meeting room of the Poland Library.

The tournament will consist of three unpublished daily New York Times crosswords, on which all contestants compete, and (for individual solvers) a final playoff puzzle for the three winners of the preliminary rounds.

Participants will have a time limit for solving each puzzle. Solving references and outside help are not permitted. The playoff puzzle will be conducted on giant stand-up boards for all to watch. Winning will be determined by the accuracy of solutions.

The registration fee for the tournament is $10. Forms are available at public libraries throughout Mahoning County.

Checks made payable to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and completed forms should be sent to the Development Office, Main Library, 305 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH 44503.

For more information contact the development office at 330-744-8636, ext. 51630.
