Both sides in NY gay-marriage tilt get ugly online

Published: Thu, June 23, 2011 @ 12:30 p.m.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The fight over legalizing gay marriage in New York is getting ugly online.

New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan has blogged that he loves gay people who want to get married but still ardently opposes gay marriage. He’s been one of the targets of cyber abuse. The vulgarities have prompted the banning of some commenters on the Catholic church’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos has also closed down the comments on his Facebook page after supporters of gay marriage used vulgarities and posted the home addresses of senators opposed to gay marriage.

Democratic Sen. Diane Savino, who supports gay marriage, also had an onslaught of offensive postings by opponents.

The question in New York is viewed as a pivotal moment in the national gay rights movement.

I find the gays in your face attitude repulsive . All they are doing is fueling contempt for themselves .

Ignoring their rights and needs has made the attitude mandatory. They don't exist in a void, you know.

The gays have no consideration for the rights of the majority . Their attitude is not persuasive but abusive . Toleration of the gays is one thing but reverence is another .

I and every other humane human support happy marriages but I reject the linguistic imperialism of the homosexual community. "Gay marriage" is just a subliminal way to support same-sex marriage, something no culture in human history has ever accepted as normative. Who ever decided that "gay" is synonymous with "homosexual" (including lesbians) instead of "happy", as is the Christmas carol "don we now our gay apparel"? Time to reclaim our language and culture, let alone come to our senses.
