Atty. Hoppel's law license suspended
The Ohio Supreme Court has suspended the law license of Richard V. Hoppel of East Liverpool for two years, with the final 18 months of that term stayed on conditions.
In a unanimous opinion released today, the high court affirmed findings by the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline that Hoppel violated state lawyer discipline rules when he accepted fee advances to represent multiple clients in bankruptcy proceedings, but failed to perform the promised work.
Because of Hoppel’s successful completion of inpatient treatment for a drug addiction that contributed to his misconduct, his maintenance of sobriety for more than two years, and his having made full restitution to all clients harmed by his misconduct, the court agreed to reduce the board-recommended sanction.
Neither Hoppel nor his lawyer could be reached to comment.
