Seminarian speaks out for gay rights

Published: Sat, June 4, 2011 @ 12:00 a.m.

Does God love homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people?

Is it time for the 21st- century church — particularly the black church — to do away with its traditional teaching that homosexuality is a sin?

Youngstown native TJ Williams, a seminary student, attempts to answer those questions and others in an opinion piece he has written for several newspapers.

Homosexuality and same-sex marriage issues again have made recent headlines. Last month, the Tennessee Senate put forth a bill to prevent the topic of homosexuality from being taught in public schools from kindergarten to eighth grade.

On the other side of the spectrum, last month’s Gallup poll shows that for the first time in Gallup’s tracking of the issue, a majority of Americans — 53 percent — believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages.

President Barck Obama has declared June as national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.

Equality Ohio, a Columbus-based organization that is an advocate for equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens, is sponsoring several gay-pride events throughout the state, including one June 12 at the B&O Banquet Center & Park at 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown.

Williams returned from a session in mid-May where he joined with hundreds of clergy with the Human Rights Campaign in Washington, D.C., to tell their stories to federal legislators. The HRC also works for gay, lesbian and transgender equal rights.

Williams, who is gay and just shy of 40 (his birthday is June 13), is a minister in training at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He is studying for his master’s of divinity degree at New York Theological Seminary. He is a member of the Riverside Church in New York and a former member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Columbus.

Williams, a singer, is a son of the late Cora Thomas, who was a Pentecostal evangelist in Youngstown.

I first wrote a column about him in 2002. His mission then was to educate faith communities, especially in the black- American church, on issues related to homosexuals and to provide positive avenues to help those afflicted with AIDS and HIV.

He hasn’t deviated much from that mission.

Here is his piece:

“In recent years, I have committed myself to the work of justice that speaks loudly and boldly to proclaim that God is on the side of the oppressed. As a seminarian and an African-American faith leader, I continue to hear progressive clergy speak out against sexism, poverty and economic injustice. But so many stop short of naming homophobia as an injustice.

“When I think of the children who have killed themselves after being bullied by taunts of being gay, I weep. The silence of faith leaders who support gay people privately contributes to this loss. And of course, many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people and their families have become used to hearing they are not loved by God. Homophobia does violence to the well-being of our children and families — whether we are gay or straight, transgender or gender conforming. No apology after the fact can bring back a child’s life. We must speak out to stop the losses and the harm.

“There is a word of hope — there is a word of honesty to be shared. Our stories are changing history. Anti-bullying legislation, employment protection and immigration changes are all on the table so that all people can live their lives in peace, regardless of who they love or who they are. Our stories — our truth telling — is making a difference.

“I submit that the message of Scripture is good news for the oppressed. Hearing the stories of gay and lesbian youth and families is hearing [about] liberation and freedom. It is also my story as an African-American man studying to be a pastor. The gospel infused into our African-American stories created black theology and the black church because we heard the stories of those crying out for justice and understood that God walked with us.

“Gay and lesbian folks have always been part of the black church. Whether in the choir, the pulpit or the pews, we have been there. Today, we long for words of hope and honesty from our gospel singers, our preachers and our neighbors. But, too often, homophobia is heard in the pulpit, and people take the message of bad news for gay and transgender people into their jobs, schools and neighborhoods. Without a word of encouragement, we are left with the discouraging message that gay and transgender lives and stories are to be ignored at best and condemned at worst.

“The stories about God in the Bible tell us that God is with us and that we do not have to be afraid to be prophetic. Being a prophet is simply a matter of speaking the truth. The truth is, that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people are created by God and loved by God. And God has already honored gay rights. Therefore, it’s time for church to catch up with God. We [gay people] have always been part of the church and all faith traditions. It’s time to tell our stories. It’s time to tell the truth.”

“The stories about God in the Bible tell us that God is with us and that we do not have to be afraid to be prophetic."

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed and the Bible is very clear on the subject . Perversion wasn't cool then and it still isn't cool today . Telling the kids today that it's cool today doesn't make it so . Corrupting the young to supply a stream of flesh for their perverted desires isn't cool . Homosexuality thrives because of indoctrination and not procreation . Heterosexuality thrives because of procreation . Procreation brought you into this world .

Stan - Perhaps you should spend a little more time in the real world and less in vindy.com. Homosexuals are NOT indoctrinated...that has been proven time and time again. I've read your nasty, negative comments on YSU, Youngstown, the North Side, the South Side, computers in the schools, etc., etc. All negative. After a while it gets old and the source considered. I don't know your story, don't care to, but obviously a tale of woe. Why not consider moving? Oh, wait, there are homo's everywhere. What the heck was God thinking when he created them, huh?

TheQuail :

Thanks for your senseless bable . Your underwriting of homosexuality is impressive . I don't set the rules of life . The rules of life AKA BIBLE spell out Sodom and Gomorrah . Each living person has a mother and a father . The rules of procreation were followed to bring this about . Trust me on the fact that the road you travel in life will lead you to destruction if the rules aren't followed .

I make no appology for not supporting the indoctrination of our young into a life of homosexuality . Corruption of our young is still a crime .

BTW Quail this article was not written about my couple of coats or so but was written about the promotion of homosexuality . Homosexuality is not Jesus approved to this very day . Let us teach our young the right way to live life and give them a chance for a normal one .

Stan, as usual, you prove how asinine you are by simply ignoring the truths that TheQuail has put before you. You are a cafeteria Christian: don't like homosexuals? Then quote that part of the Bible. Like pork and shellfish? Then quietly pretend like that part of the Bible doesn't exist.

Bigot. Plain and simple. YOU.

Not to mention hypocrite.

Well Quail, I am not going to reduce my coats down to one and liquidate my assets and give the money for aids research anytime soon . Since I am not into spreading the aids virus or corrupting anyone to pursue the homosexual life style I may not be judged too harshly . Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed but I suppose I may be taking my chances dining on ham and shellfish . Those who indoctrinate our young into homosexuality and pursue that lust may have a far harsher fate ahead . In this world we still have laws on the books dealing with perverts preying on our young . However there is no law on the books or any penalty for shellfish or ham cuisine .

Once of the main differences between liberals (me) and conservatives (Stan) is, for the most part, we liberals are able to accept the fact that we are all created equal...but different and unique, and can accept a view although different from ours. This is not the case with conservatives who can only see one view...theirs. All other views and opinions are wrong. I'm sure if Jesus were with us today...he would be a liberal without a doubt.

Quail....i called it a long time ago. Stan keeps claiming that people can be recruited into becoming gay.

Anyone with a brain knows that people can't be recruited or tricked into changing their sexuality. I was born straight and nothing can change that. People that are born gay are the way God made them and i wish them all the happiness in the world.

The fact that stan is convinced that people can be turned gay is obviously speaking to his own issues. I don't think anyone should be surprised at the level of confusion in stan's head.

@stan: Ok, you have told me enough...I did not realize that you had the inside connection regarding what Jesus approves of and of what he doesn't approve. It only makes sense then that gays are only jewish, buddist, muslim, hindi or atheist. I often wondered about that. I thought Jesus preached tolerance, but again, apparently I'm wrong. Sorry, Jesus.

@Diane - how in the world did you gleem "the scripture approves of homosexuals" from the article? I read it twice and was at a loss as to how you misquoted even that article. Therefore, imagine how many interpretations every passage of the Bible is subjected. Some people are quoting the old testament and yet mixing it with Jesus. If that were the case, slavery would also be acceptable (old testament as well). Another commandment I give you...to love one another (he did not provide an asterix and footnote of people to exclude), Not a bad idea, regardless of your beliefs, to really follow Jesus and not your own minds.

I would gleem that the semenarian's comment "And God has already honored gay rights. Therefore, it’s time for church to catch up with God" to be an attempt to say that the Scripture approves of homosexuals, bisexuals, and transexuals. Jesus spoke of compassion and repentance. Therefore, to preach to the LGBT community that their lifestyle is acceptable to the Lord is to also knowingly speak a falsehood or lie! It is the Christian's duty to shepherd the wayward sheep and bring them into God's fold, no matter what their sin. But, repentance and compassion is key.

"Hearing the stories of gay and lesbian youth and families is hearing [about] liberation and freedom."

When you are before the judge for corrupting the morals of a child with your perversion explain your logic to him . We have many sex offenders in prison yearning for liberation and freedom . If you dont fear the hereafter the judge will make you fear the here and now . In prison you will be compatable with your own age group .

Homosexuality, just like other major sins, is open to repentance: whoever repents, Allaah will accept his repentance.

Yep, this lifestyle isn't Allah approved nor Jesus approved .

Stan, I think as a Christian, you would be reading the New Testament a bit more. Jesus message was one of love. It was one of forgiving others unendlessly. It was about not casting stones....he did sort of mention that he came to set straight things so that make the old testament a little less important to Christians.

Romans 1:19  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29  Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30  Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31  Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32  Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Romans 2:1  Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2  But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
3  And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4  Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5  But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6  Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7  To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8  But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9  Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10  But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11  For there is no respect of persons with God.

Romans 2:12  For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13  (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14  For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15  Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16  In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

17  Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
18  And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
19  And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20  An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21  Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
22  Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
23  Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
24  For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
25  For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26  Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27  And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
28  For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29  But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

What ever happened to "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone?"

Yes, a very misunderstood quote by Jesus. In this event, the scribes were attempting to put Jesus to the test and he refused to be drawn into their trap. At first he ignored them but when pressed, he stood up, boldly gave this answer, and bent down again, ignoring them. In a short while, all of the men left and jesus asked if anyone condemned her. She said, no, and Jesus said that he, too, would not condemn her. He then told her to leave and to SIN NO MORE!

The men were using Old Testament Law to try to condemn the harlot by stoning her for her actions. But, Jesus kneew that the very men that wanted to condemn her were also the same men that used the services she provided. Thus, they were hypocites. We are taught that only God the Father has the power to provide judgement and condemnation when it comes to the heavenly issue. However, we are not forbidden to comment on issues with the earthly issues when people sin. If we didn't, then we would not have judges, juries, and prisons! It is our very duty to point out when people have sinned and hold them accountable.

The problem with the homosexual issue is that we are to lead lives of chastity. The Christian perspective of sexual relations is one which will lead to the propagation of life. As it is not possible for those very acts to not lead to the propagation of life, it is seen as a defilement of the body, and thus, sin. Unfortuantely, I don't think this seminarian has studied his bible very well!

Our walking corrupted encyclopedia also known as Quail has a dynamic benchmark for the classification of homosexuals . I prefer a static classification . The term homosexual covers the activities between both genders . Quail sees the need for flexible classification in his attempt at shifting the credit for their accomplishments .

Youngstown native TJ Williams who I don't dispute his level of knowledge and expertise with the homosexual world is sorely lacking when it comes to the real world . His seeking the stamp of approval from the heterosexual world is amusing to say the least . To be a heterosexual you have to be exclusive . Heterosexuality ceases to be when homosexuality is included . Homosexuals are very inclusive when it comes to satisfying their sexual appetite . Indoctrination is so very much on their agenda .

A penis goes into a vagina to create children. Anything else is not normal....Even heterosexuals having oral, anal, or any other crevis of the body type of sex are distorting the normal way. I say any heterosexual male who puts his penis inside of a females mouth isn't any better than a homosexual, and like wise for females. Everybody has a mouth. If you were to close your eyes and a mouth was on your private part you wouldnt be able to tell the difference if its a male or female mouth *unless you feel a beard* lol like wise for anal, everybody has one male and female....Im saying this to say that if you feel homosexuality is so perverted *I feel its immoral* then you better not be having oral or anal sex with your "straight" partner because just what your doing, is exactly what homosexuals do to "get off".

Well@Quail, To answer your question, my belief system really can't determine whats normal for others. I should change the word normal to "natural". Kinda of like a woman colors her hair...She has the right to, but thats not "natural". If she says to others "well this is natural to me" she has the right to feel that way but the hardcore truth is thats not the color that grows out of her head no matter how natural she wants to claim it is. Same case with the sex thing. Its "natural" to put a penis in a vagina for babies. Putting a penis in a mouth, anus, ear, nose etc. is just not natural. Now, dont get me wrong, i'm not condemning anybody because like you said at the end of the day that person decides whats best for them but the truth is truth. The way God created our private parts was for them to come together "male and female" and produce babies. Doing it any other way is not natural. And in my earlier post I was just pointing out that if a person has sex the "not natural" way they CANT condemn a homosexual because they are doing just what the homosexual do to get off!! And yes, I love all people, no I dont care if they pass a gay right law because they should be treated like human beings! People shouldn't condemn them because of their sexuality because guess what? They are not in the room with them while they are getting it on...so their sexuality has nothing to do with anybody, so people shouldn't treat them badly because of their supposed sexual preference. So what, as long as they are not in my face "getting it on" im fine. As long as ANYBODY isnt' in my face getting it on gay or straight, what the heck right do I have to treat them mean for?

The Quail,
The problem is, this is an article about a Christian preacher that is spreading a message that is contrary to God's Laws. We show our love and are drawn nearer to Him by obeying the laws or commandments. The preacher wants to say that God loves every member of the LGBT community. He does, even though they are sinners. We are all sinners and God loves us unconditionally. But, when we sin, we turn our backs on God, not vice versa.

Science has shown that some people are born with homosexual tendancies and traits. But, it is acting on those tendancies that is a sin. You are to live a chaste and virtuous life. Remember, Jesus did not condemn the prostitute but told her to go and sin no more.

@Stanly, think about it. What do homosexuals want the right to? To be treated fairly right? They should be treated fairly! We are not God, we cant condemn them. We are also ALL not perfect. We all do things that make us fall short of the glory of God! Now I feel that it is immoral to have a sexual relationship with the same sex, but how ANYBODY has sex is none of mine or your business and should not be the determining factor on how well i'm going to treat the person. Everybody should be treated according to their character. Now if that homosexual is rude then like any other rude person I will not have much respect for them. But if they have good character why cant they be treated with respect?

They also now have the right to adopt . As if chasing the kids down in the streets wasn't good enough for them . Thank God that we still have laws on the books to deal with their corruption of our young .

James Martin Kopan, 46, of Andrew Street in Sharon, Pa., will appear next Monday in District Court in Mercer.

The charges stem from incidents that occurred with a 12-year-old boy at Kopan’s bowling alley, Tornado Alley in Coolspring Township, in May, said Pennsylvania State Police. Police said Kopan was arrested on a warrant. They did not give an arrest date.

Kopan was taken to Mercer County Jail, police said.

Kopan was arrested March 2 and charged with similar crimes involving four children — age 7, 9, 9 and 12 — at the alley in November, police said.

State police said he fondled those victims, showed them pornography and exposed himself to them.

Police said they are investigating whether there are more victims.

Da Quail :

Demean ?
1. Cause a severe loss in the dignity of and respect for (someone or something).

Naw, that was not my demeanor .
Noun: Outward behavior or bearing: "a quiet, somber demeanor".

You had completely misconstrued the meaning and intent of my post . I was indeed complimenting you on your ability to take on another role .
