Youngstown's North Side without water after main break this morning

Published: Sat, July 23, 2011 @ 7:10 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

A main waterline break near Northside Hospital left much of the North Side without water Saturday.

The break happened before 7 a.m., and crews were hoping to restore water by 9 p.m., a water department spokesperson said.

The spokesperson was not sure what caused the break. Crews were still on the scene early in the evening.

Youngstown's water pipes are old & have lacked maintenance for decades . We will see more of these breaks more often; & there will already be many minor leaks which aren't obvious but still cost a lot in water losses .
A catchup maintenance & replacement program will need to be established soon.

Possibly the new parking lot to be constructed at the Paramount Theater site with $300,000 in water revenue will help.

Raise the water rates so the pipes can be fixed. Simpler solution or is it?

This took out parts of Youngstown, Liberty and Girard. No boil alert was issued, yet is required by law. The news was first 'discovered' by the Vindicator, and NO other news outlets, but released 12 hours later. EPA rules says automatic boil alert for those affected, but did the news announce anything promptly on TV/Radio? (NO!) Walmart in Liberty was boxing up all their freezer and meat foods, because their new 'green' system requires high water pressure to operate. Did Walmart toss this food out?...Gave it to the shelters last night? Restock the same possibly contaminated food today or get a complete new truckload?

Good catch. I never even thought about the lack of boil alert. And no wonder our Liberty Walmart was tossing a bunch of freezer stuff yesterday, I just assumed they lost power Sat. night as we did here in Liberty. What a waste.
Our water pressure was low the entire day on Saturday from 6:30 am till I called it a night around midnight when our power went out. Must have been a major break that took all day to repair.
