Alleged shoplifter arrested, jailed

Published: Fri, July 22, 2011 @ 1:45 p.m.

A 23-year-old Warren woman was charged with robbery after she reportedly fought with a loss prevention officer and off-duty Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper who tried to stop her from shoplifting at about 7 p.m. Thursday

Valencia Marie Howard was arrested in the parking lot of Old Navy, 377 Boardman-Poland Road, after police said she tried to shoplift merchandise and fought with two people who tried to confront her. She was taken to Mahoning County jail on a $12,000 bond and also was found to have an active warrant from the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office for contempt of court, reports state.

To initiate assault on a suspect may be stepping beyond the bounds of the law. This young lady needs expert legal council to protect her rights.

A woman with such a baby face should never have been attacked.

Breathtaking how much water The Vindy is carrying in their attempt to scare the Boardman voters into passing their upcoming levy with a story about shoplifting that in other communities would warrant one paragraph on page 11 of Section B.

@AtownAugie, you are exactly right. There has been a huge uptick in the reports from the Boardman PD in efforts to make it seem like they are handling more crime, or even funnier, more violent crime. They have simply chosen to let crime go in efforts to make it seem like it's out of control when the reality is that if they would be held accountable to any performance standards the crime would be effectively handled. Note how many times a day you see Boardman patrol cars parked way back off the road, not watching traffic, or two parked side by side in vacant business parking lots. No effort, no results. I don't think it's Vindy supporting them, it's Boardman PD being sure to report all these minimal crimes in the effort to make folks think more is going on. Make the retailers hold these ghetto crawlers in a room until there is time to address the shoplifting, or let the jveniles sit until some guardian comes to handle them. The Boardman PD has signed deal with the devil in handling WalMarts bull--it petty crimes while the rest of the criminal activity that really matters goes unchecked.

A $12,000 bond for shoplifting is outrageous . It's not like she killed anyone . Old Navy should drop the charges and give her a shopping spree for the publicity that she has generated for them .

The Vindy should consider riding along with a cab driver in the wee hours to get an idea of crime.
